Winter League angler banks biggest ever perch caught in match.
An angler competing in his local Winter League competition received the shock of his angling life, when he landed a perch weighing a massive 5lb 4oz.
Steve Prior of Central Trains AC was fishing a match at Worcestershire’s Woodside Fishery when he hooked the huge fish, thought to be one of the biggest ever landed in a match.
Fishing the venue’s Island Pool, Steve was targeting carp with chopped worm and caster on the pole from peg 12 when the large predator struck.
The fish is a new record for the fishery, which has a number of big perch in its waters – a fish of 3lb was also caught on the same day in another eater on the venue’s Woodside Pool.
“We’re always getting reports from anglers of big perch having been caught but no body ever takes photos of them or gets them witnessed so we’re never too sure exactly how big they are,” said fishery co-owner Jane Hughes. “This fish was weighed twice and witnessed by lots of anglers and has already created a lot of interest from other anglers who want to come down and try to catch it.”
Unfortunately for Steve the although huge, the fish wasn’t quite good enough to clinch victory in the match for him, but he did manage to take second place.
