2012 World Champs dates give super stars shot at prestigious river festival.
For the first time in nearly a decade the annual Evesham Festival will see members of the England match team able to fish during the three-day event.
Being held on next year's August bank holiday, the huge team-fishing event on the Warwickshire Avon attracts thousands of visitors every year. However, the festival historically clashes with the dates of the World Championships meaning the country’s best anglers miss out on the competition.
Next year though the World Championships senior float fishing event is being held in the middle of September, giving the England team members the opportunity to compete at one of the jewels in the crown of the match angling calendar for the first time in years.
“The World Championship senior float event doesn’t start until around September 15 next year, so the team isn’t going to go out to the Czech Republic until the beginning of September,” England team manager Mark Downes told Match Fishing. “It’s great news that means we can get to actually go to Evesham this year. I’m really looking forward to the event and am planning on being there all three days.”
England international Sean Ashby is also pleased that the dates have worked differently for 2012.
“Since I’ve been in the international squad I’ve really missed fishing at Evesham,” he told Match Fishing. “For someone like me who’s not that keen on fishing commercials for carp it’s a festival with proper fishing and with a brilliant prize fund.
"With the World Champs event falling were it does next year if I do get picked for the international squad again it’s perfect timing. It also means that I, along with a couple of the other England lads, can also fish with our teams if they get through to the finals held at the festival.”
