Bag of big chub seals victory for Shakespeare Superteam on Coventry canal.
The first round of the Coventry canal winter league series has been won by a surprise bag of fish to specimen proportions.
Darren Lewis of the Shakespeare Superteam took the top spot in the competition with a bag of big chub to nearly 5lb for a total weight of over 20lb.
Fishing an end peg on the canal near Bedworth, Darren fished long pole at 11.5m with caster and joker to take five chub – one of which took him 25minutes to land on a size 24hook and 0.06 bottom. He also managed to net a further 3lb of small roach and perch caught on bread punch.
“That section of the Coventry canal along near Gipsy Lane going through Bedworth on into Nuneaton is known for its chub,” Gareth Davies, owner of local tackle shop Tusses located on the canal not far from where the match was held told Match Fishing. “You can catch plenty of smaller chub along there, but I’ve never heard of fish coming out to nearly 5lb before. That’s a hell of a fish for a canal and especially in a match.”
Darren’s final weight of 20lb 3oz was more than enough to take victory, beating the second placed angler by over 15lb. Darren’s exploits also helped to seal a first round win for his Shakespeare team.
