Maver's Wayne Mellings does a back-to-back at Moorlands.
Maver Midlands captain Wayne Mellings showed that keeping an active angling mind and ringing the changes is the way to win, after taking back-to-back open victories at Worcestershire’s Morrlands Farm.
The Saturday draw bag saw Wayne land peg 9 on Bank pool, a ‘half decent peg’ as Wayne described it and one that he plundered to beat second place by over 30lb.
“I started on the waggler fishing at about 2foot depth with 4 and 6mm expanders on while trickling in 4mm pellets and had two fish but then it dries up,” Wayne told Match Fishing.
“The fish were really unsettled and I had to go chasing them, so I went on the pole line with the same bait and feeding but couldn’t catch so came back to the wag.”
Carrying on feeding the pole line a later swap back to it saw six fish come straight away and after that it was a case of feeding various spots and swapping between the pole and waggler to keep the bites coming.
“It was tough but it was just a case of ringing the changes as soon as you stopped catching, a switch to corn every now and then proved a good fish catching too,” added Wayne.
At the weigh in the midlands ace posted a total of 84lb 15oz to romp home I first place.
Sunday's open started with a bad draw for Wayne taking peg 60 on Meadow Pool - although what started off as the Maver man moaning at the draw bag turned into a second victory on the trot.
Starting on the straight lead Wayne was straight into liners so came shorter and started picking off carp. A switch to pole at 14meters feeding 4mm pellets with expanders or corn on the hook saw him keep up with the fish, and by moving around Wayne finally weighed in 6lb over second place.
“Thinking and changing your tactics until something works and you find the fish is key and it won me these two matches,” continued Wayne who won the Saturday Moorlands open the previous week as well. “Sometimes the fish just need chasing.”
