Cox Makes It Count!

Darren Cox in Fish 'O' Mania Final!
Garbolino-backed ace, Darren Cox has qualified for the Fish ‘O’ Mania final, after winning the 130-peg qualifying match at Shropshire’s Octoplus Boldings Fishery.

Remarkably, this is the fourth time in his career that Darren has qualified for the big-money final – which this year carries a prize fund of £30,000.
It is also the third time that he has qualified on his first attempt of a season!

He commented: “I am over the moon to be in the final for a fourth time, and qualifying so early in the year will give me plenty of time to focus on practicing and preparing for it.

"I was one of the last to draw on the day, and because I am not familiar with the pegs at Boldings, I picked the brains of a couple of local anglers after I had drawn. They told me that Peg 6 on Sycamore is a very consistent area – and when I arrived at my peg to see loads of fish topping in front of me, I could see why!

"I was told that catching up in the water would be the key to success and, with that in mind, I made a shallow pole line my main line of attack. Because of the number of anglers around the lake, I was keen not to plunder my shallow line too quickly, though,  in case the fish backed off.

"For that reason, I started the session on bomb and popped-up bread, while feeding my shallow line to build the fishes' confidence. It proved a lucrative ploy, as I had three fish in the net for just short of 20lb in the first hour of the match!

"When bites dried up, I switched to my shallow line, but no bites were forthcoming – I knew it was a case of feeding until the fish turned up, before plundering them. I had a look down the edge, and took a small F1, before going back shallow – and fortunately the fish were there!

"Fishing three and a half feet deep in around 10 feet of water, I caught good F1s, fishing a banded 6mm pellet on the hook and feeding 4mm pellets. I also managed two bonus carp from the same line, to finish with an 82lb 7oz total.

"When I found out that I had done enough to take top spot, I was absolutely over the moon – the Fish ‘O’ Mania final is one of those matches that everyone wants to fish and I can’t wait!”
