Drennan Knockout Cup – The Final

This year’s final is underway LIVE at Docklow Pools, Leominster.

Reporting LIVE From the bankside, today and tomorrow sees the final of the ultra-prestigious Drennan Knockout Cup final.

From a 100-plus strong elite starting line-up earlier in the year the contestants have been whittled down over five arduous rounds spanning rivers, canals and commercials, to leave just four stars! (From left to right on the image) Geoff Valance, Gary Miller, Rob Wootton and Andy Power.

In a change to the usual format, which usually sees two anglers compete on day one and carry their weight into day two, this year’s final will see all four compete on day one with the two anglers having the best weights progressing to day two. The weights will start from zero on day two to make the playing field as fair as possible.

The anglers are fishing from 11am until 4pm with the Match Lake being used. Gary Miller is on peg 3, Andy Power on 5, Rob Wooton on 8 and Geoff Valance on 10. Of course, this is the second final for Rob and Gary, who are both previous champions of the event. To make the final of this event just once is a huge achievement, but twice is simply incredible and true testament to these anglers’ abilities across all disciplines.

Each finalist is allowed a runner for the match, with Rob Wootton the only one choosing not to take up the opportunity of having a second pair of eyes and ears sat behind him. Gary has chosen one of his good friends and owner of the fantastic Lake John fishery complex, Colin, to help him along. Andy has seeked help in the form of Welsh International Lee Edwards and Geoff has brought along his partner and expert female anger, Sophie Hill.

With the weather proving milder than previous years day one should make for an exhilarating final, which from all angles is too tough to call at this stage. With the rest of the pool closed and plenty of room between each angler it’s a case of coming up with a winning plan and sticking to your guns. Michael Buchwalder won day one of this event last year from peg 10, which has served to offer Geoff a bit of a boost today. And, while the match has been pegged as fairly as possible, peg 10 was a favoured draw.

Our huge thanks goes to Docklow Pools for hosting the final as well as Drennan for supporting the event so generously. There’s no money to be won today, but the overall runner up will go home £1,000 richer tomorrow the winner will collect a cool £5,000!

We’ll bring you an update after the match, but for now the only question is… who’s your money on?
