Report: A good turn out despite the cold weather with rain that was forecast saw twenty one anglers fish Exeters silverfish match on the match lake at Goodiford Mill in Cullompton on Sunday the 29th of January. In attempt to get everyone some bites the second bay pegs 28 through to 37 were combined with 1 through to 16. In contrast to the week before the lake was flat calm for most of the match with grey cloud bringing light rain towards the end of the day, this should have been perfect except for the heavy overnight frost and water temperature of just 3 degrees.
Those anglers in the shallower pegs or who managed to catch in the water had the better days fishing. Winner on the day taking the £75 1st prize was Steve Hayman from peg 3 who managed a fantastic mixed bag including a variety of bonus fish with Tench, Crucian, Skimmers and 1lb+ roach in his total of 23lb 6oz. Steve fished 4mm expander over a mixture of micro's & groundbait having to vary his feed pattern to keep the fish interested through out the match. Second on the day taking home £55 was Zac Newton (Team ALS) with 20lb 8oz from peg 7, fishing shy of the bar with single caster on a light waggler he caught good size roach after a slow start due to carp which were still feeding despite the water being so cold - his catch also included a good perch and a couple of hybrids which were all caught up in the water. Completing the frame and winning £35 was Alex Kerr from peg 2, he alternated between a pole and waggler approach catching mainly roach on maggots.
The Section winners all won £20; Section A was taken by default by Eddie Evans (Team Jinx) with 12lb 9oz from peg 1. Section B was won by Duncan Hill with his catch of 15lb 14oz from peg 13. Gary Thornton (Team ALS) snuck in to win section C by just 1oz with his catch of 14lb 9oz.
