Emma Is Top Lady

Emma Pickering wins the Angling Trust Ladies’ National Championship title.
England international and former Ladies' National Champion Emma Pickering (Doncaster AA) has won this year's Ladies' National with a 32kg 500g bag, from Colemans Cottage Fishery in Essex.

Emma's net contained a mixed bag of F1s, smallish carp and silver fish taken mainly on worm tails. Emma started at four metres on Peg 21, but had to follow the fish out to seven metres to stay in touch with them.

Emma was delighted when she heard that she'd won, explaining: “I felt happy when I drew the peg – after speaking to a couple of the local lads during the week leading up to the match I knew that I was in the area I needed to be. My match was really straightforward – I started at four metres with pellets and a worm head on the hook. By the end of the match I was fishing seven metres. I just followed the fish out throughout the match. I started by feeding micro pellets, but the fish didn't seem to want to settle, so I changed to 4mm pellets so there was less particles going in my peg, and this made a huge difference.

“I am absolutely thrilled to have won the National. It’s been a long six years trying to win again. I’ve just missed the top spot in the last few National Championships, and for our team to win this as well has made it even better.”

A total of 40 ladies faced rather cool and breezy conditions at Colemans. The match, fished on Stepfield Lake, proved to be a game of two halves with the first nine weights all coming from the front half of the lake, even though the back half had a lot of extra fish stocked earlier in the week.

Runner-up position was taken by Suffolk County Gold angler Jessica Knights on Peg 3 with 25kg 630g – again a mixed bag taken up in the water to start off, with Jessica later finding some better fish down the margins. Jessica, as the highest-placed angler under 21 took the Claire Dagnall memorial trophy.

Last year's champion, Sophie Davis (Starlets AS), took third place with another mixed bag. Sophie started by fishing pellet short, before switching to the Method feeder, then the short pole late on in the match to finish with 24kg 720g from Peg 11.

In fourth place was Elizabeth Larkin from Colchester on Peg 2 with 21kg 920g. Fifth place went to Samantha Perkins (Doncaster AA) with 21kg 830g on Peg 5, and in sixth place was Abi Brewster (Suffolk County Red) with 20kg 520g from Peg 24.

The team trophy was taken by the Doncaster quartet of Emma Pickering, Sam Perkins, Abi Kendall and Samantha Sim with a fantastic total weight of 88kg 770g. Second place went to Suffolk County Red with 62kg 500g, and last year’s winners Starlets AS finished third with 58kg 160g.

Next year’s Angling Trust Ladies’ National Championship will be held on Saturday, June 7th at Preston Innovations Boldings Pools at Bridgnorth, Shropshire.
