England Top At Cudmore

Close finish sees Scotland pipped at the post.
Drennan Team England have won the inaugural Fish 'O' Mania International Pairs Competition at Cudmore Fisheries.

The team – made up of five-time World Champion Alan Scotthorne, and former World Champion Will Raison – were pre-match favourites, but didn’t have things all their own way.

The Scottish team – Dave Corcoran and Jamie Masson – led for much of the competition, with both anglers catching carp steadily up in the water.

A late rally from England, however, saw Scotland's lead recovered with just 50 minutes of the match remaining.

England manager Mark Downes was delighted with the comeback: "To be honest, with an hour and a half of the match to go, I was worried, as we were lying fifth – and I knew a change of tactics was needed if we were going to pull back Scotland's lead.

"Shallow fishing wasn’t really working for us, so we switched to fishing a margin line around two metres off the back, which we fed with groundbait and dead maggots. This proved a golden move. We put 17.5kg on the scales over the next 30 minutes, and after an hour we had managed to take the lead.

"Full credit to Will and Alan for pulling off a brilliant comeback. The £10,000 winners' cheque will go into Drennan Team England funds."

Result:

Teams:
1 Drennan Team England 67.5kg
2 Scotland 59kg
3 Tri-Cast Weston Pools Wales

Individual winner: Will Raison, Drennan Team England.
