The Glebe Gets A Facelift

Popular carp water receives winter makeover!

Recently voted by Match Fishing readers as your favourite venue, The Glebe Fishery, in Leicestershire, has been having a bit of a facelift this winter.

The venue has yearly maintenance projects but with a lot of wear and tear in recent years, Pool 1 has needed more than its share of TLC. A massive project was undertaken in the early part of January, when the lake's levels were dropped to allow work to be completed.

Firstly the platforms have been repaired and replaced where needed. The lake bed has also been worked on with all of the rubble, rocks and bricks removed. Further to this the undercut marginal banks have been filled in with rocks to prevent erosion.

The far bank has also had some much-needed care with lots of rubbish being removed along the length of the bank along with vegetation.

There have also been improvements made to the stocking. Fishery owner Roy Marlow prides himself on fishery management and has a structured stocking policy. The key to this is the REMOVAL of fish, and 2,000lb of small silver fish have been removed. This may seem like a drastic move but the small fish consume a lot of the oxygen and are what can cause problems at a lot of fisheries. The removal of these smaller fish actually improves the fishery as a whole. It doesn’t end there, though, as these small fish are simply swapped for carp and 2014 will see a stocking of carp into Pool 1.

All of these improvements are just the latest in a long line of changes that get made to this amazing venue on a yearly basis.
