Hayfield's Hot For Silvers

Scotthorne Rules The Roost In First Silverfish Open!

This Saturday saw the start of the silverfish open matches at Doncaster’s Hayfield Lakes. Despite the first major freeze of the year, a strong field of anglers turned out in a match that provided some fantastic sport. Pegged across both Big and Little Adams Lakes, any carp caught counted as just 1lb, so not to spoil the sport offered by the head of roach, perch, skimmers and crucians present!

Leading the pack was none other than five times World Champion, Alan Scotthorne. Pegged on the back bank of Little Adams, The Drennan/Sensas backed legend put together a fantastic 23-12-0 net of roach and skimmers to 1lb, as well as a welcome 4lb bream. Bloodworm and joker tactics were order of the day, fished at both 7m and 13m on the pole, feeding a mixture of groundbait and leam with a helping of casters.

Not far behind was Preston Innovations’ Lee Kerry, from nearby Peg 16 with 20-0-0. Lee’s net contained mainly roach taken on the short pole with bloodworm, as well as a handful of crucians and big perch falling to caster later in the day.

Last in the money was another Ultimate Barnsley Blacks’ angler, Matt Godfrey, taking 19-0-0 of big roach with the odd skimmer from Big Adams Peg 54. Double figure weights of quality roach were caught around the complex. Bailiff, Dave Taylor, told us “The silverfish in this venue are left untouched for most of the year, as match anglers target carp with big baits. Come the winter, they’re raring to feed, and as it gets colder the roach sport seems to get better and better!”
