Joe Carass explains why he believes the Guru Pellet Waggler hook is the ultimate choice for rod-and-line tactics!Hook choice is a constant source of confusion for me. I like certain patterns of hooks for pole fishing and use them a lot – the Kamasan B911 and Drennan Silverfish Pellet spring immediately to mind. But when it comes to eyed hooks for rod-and-line fishing, I must admit to being a bit of a chopper and changer. The Guru QM1 has long been my favourite hook pattern for any kind of legering for carp, as once a carp is hooked with this piece of steel they rarely come off! There are times, though, when I have felt that they were just not quite right.
England International Steve Hemingray impresses yet again on the elite stage by winning the prestigious Rive Drennan Cup.
Held on the vast 15km Lac Au Duc in Ploermel, France, The Rive Drennan Cup attracted 120 of the world’s finest anglers – but it was Steve who proved his class and took home the £2000 first prize.
With the pole only producing small fish, Steve turned to the waggler in search of the lakes better quality skimmers. Fishing at 25metres, Steve’s plan revolved around firing rich feed-laced balls accurately at his 8g-fixed waggler.

Maver and Bag 'em superstar, Jamie Hughes, reaches Maver Match This Final for the fourth year running! One of the hottest days of the year greeted anglers for this year's Mega Match This qualifier at Boldings Pools, Bridgnorth. With temperatures approaching 25°C, anglers were aware before the match that the resident carp had started to spawn, but no-one could be sure how this would impact on the fishing. Thankfully, there were still plenty of carp willing to feed with the top four anglers all achieving 100lb plus catches.
Winner on the day, and making his way to another Mega Match This Final, was Maver's Jamie Hughes.
Garbolino are delighted to announce they have agreed a three-year sponsorship deal with Ireland’s National Feeder Team. The deal, which is valued at more than €14,000 over the three years, should help the team which will be known as Garbolino Team Ireland Feeder, develop further to compete at the highest level. Who knows, they might even get their first team medal on home soil this year! SERT UK General Manager Darren Cox commented:“We are delighted to have teamed up with the Irish National Feeder team! We have recently launched our brands into Ireland and we would like to focus our attention gaining some market share in the coarse/match sector with the Garbolino brand. What better way than to have Ireland’s National Feeder team using our products! I know most of these great guys personally and I know they will also work hard to promote Garbolino in Ireland for us.
Important rule clarification for Round One of the2014 Drennan Knockout Cup. For all competitors fishing this event, please note that meat in all forms will be banned both as feed and hook bait. Garbolino Lindholme Lakes owner, Neil Grantham, has taken the decision to ban the use of the bait for open matches, but is still happy for it to be used in larger one-off matches where permission is previously granted by him. However,Match Fishing editor, Alex Bones, who runs the event has taken the decision to ban its use on the Drennan Knockout Cup round (round one).
Well respected and top angler Mark Pollard has just visited Match Fishing HQ with his new range of pole floats – available in tackle shops now!
There are five patterns in the initial launch and they are aimed at silver-fish fishing and F1s. The MP range starts with the MP1 and finishes with the MP5.
Mark had this to say on the range: “The MP1 is a classic roach float and a shape that I have used for over 20 years. It is suitable for canals and drains and is great for squatt/punch work.
Most financially rewarding match ever!
Ticket sales so far for this year's Mega Match This event are at an all time high with the opening five qualifiers having already produced two sell-outs and one near sell-out with the second Larford Lakes qualifier taking place this weekend also looking like a possible sell-out! Taking this into account, Maver MD and event founder, Philip Briscoe has recently announced the introduction of section payouts for the 2014 Grand Final in addition to the standard top three overall payout. There are also plans to increase the winner's prize if ticket sales allow. This year's final will, therefore, see four six-peg sections with each one paying out £1,000 to the winner in addition to the winner's prize (minimum £50,000), second place (£5,000) and third place (£3,000) payouts. "As an added incentive for finalists, I will be paying £1,000 every six pegs.
