The Italian Job

Shipp & Kerry's Italian Glory
Des Shipp and Lee Kerry have returned form Preston Innovations Italia Festival in victorious style, after each winning a day of the star studded competition.

The event, which is open to Preston Innovations consultants from throughout Europe, is contested on the prolific Lake Faldo and River Tevere.

The first day of the event is a coaching day - and taught Lee Kerry some lessons that were to prove very valuable. Lee explained: "The first major match of the festival is a pairs event that takes place on Lake Faldo, but the coaching day before the event proved a good chance to practice. I fished with a 16 year old Italian lad called Greg Giovannoni. He was a cracking little angler, and together we worked out a couple of edges that were to prove invaluable.

Most people were fishing small pellet feeders, and catching small carp or carassio every chuck in. We did the same, but both felt that there would be a better way of singling out the better carp. First, we tried a Method feeder, but it seemed to take too long to break down. We switched to a banjo feeder, and the result was frightening, we caught bigger fish than everybody else - with a red Sonubaits Band Um proving the best hookbait.

I decided to fish with Greg on the match the following day, and our plan worked brilliantly! I won the match with 70 kilos, and Greg came second with 58 kilos! Needless to say, we won the pairs event, with Des Shipp and Tommy Pickering finishing in second place."

Des's moment of glory was still to come however, as the final day of the festival took place on the River Tevere. Chub were the target species, and Des felt sure that a pole and maggot approach would prove effective. Fishing groundbait on a short pole line, and sticky mag just past it, Des landed 15 chub for a total weight of 9 kilos - which was enough to win the match outright.

Des explained: "It was an awesome days fishing, when ringing the changes to keep bites coming was definitely the best way to go. I alternated between a 0.8g and a 1g rig for the duration of the day, and caught several smaller fish over groundbait before moving onto my stikcymag line later on in the day. All in all it was a fantastic event to be a part of, and my thanks go out to the sponsors, Preston Innovations, and to the Italians for their hospitality."
