The Nick Speed Blog
Our new blogger Nick Speed has been in great form lately but just how did he do this week?
Saturday 2/2/13.
Lindholme Lakes, Bonsai, 25 pegs.
Well yet another windy day at “Windholme”, and to make it worse I drew Peg 9 on the narrow bank, this is a good draw but the wind was going to make this a difficult day. Especially when I need to fish 15 metres tight against the island for F1s and Mirrors, if I want to stand a chance of extracting enough weight to frame.
With a strong cross wind this was going to be a day at the “gym”, and because the cold wind was so strong I decided to feed a bloodworm line down the track for roach, so I could drop on this when I couldn’t fish across. My main intentions though was to spend as much time as possible across as this was where I was expecting the bulk of my weight to come from.
I set up a couple of pellet rigs for across, that would cover me for two different depths of 2/3ft, and also a 4 x 14 Ultimate 1 bloodworm rig. At the start I fed 5 balls at 9 metres of Dynamite Silver X Roach, combined with some leam, soil and Joker. I then went straight across and opened up a couple of pellet lines in 3ft of water up to the island.
It didn’t take long for me to realise that this was going to be a stress full day as no matter where I tried to lower my rig in against the island I was snagging up on under growth from the banking.
After the first 90 minutes I had only managed 3 small F1s, and I could see my chances of framing slipping away so I gave up across and had to settle for just a decent days roach sport on bloodworm instead, if I wouldn’t have fed the worm down the middle I think an early bath would have been in order!
Anyway I ended up having a decent days fishing and weighed in 17lb of roach which was close but no Cigar! But a good day’s fishing none the less with plenty of bites.
Andy whitehouse won the match with 37lb from peg 13.
Alex Docherty was 2nd with 30lb from peg 70.
John Allerton was 3rd with 29lb from peg 59.
Sunday 3/2/13.
Lindholme winter league, round 8.
Laurels/ Willows. 28 pegs
With only 3 rounds remaining of the league, and with me in pole position by one point over the chasing pack, another much needed Section win would definitely be a Brucy Bonus.
I drew peg 25 on Laurels, Happy days. This is a great peg (On the Point), the only problem was I also had john Allerton, Sean Cameroon, and Ben Fisk to compete against in my section alone and they were also on noted pegs.
Set up wise it was to be a quite a simple match, just two rigs was all I set up, both identical just in case. This is quite a level peg so with one rig I could cover an array of line’s starting from 6 metres and working my way out to 16 metres if needed.
On the whistle I started short at 6 sections just sprinkling a few micros out and using a 4mm expander on the hook and after a bite less half hour I then proceeded to 8 sections, I then started to put a run of decent stamp F1’s in the net.
Entering into the 3rd hour I was catching well off a couple of lines at 8 and 9 sections, and by the end of the 3rd hour I had now opened up a couple more lines at 10 sections.
In the last 90 minutes I caught really well off these long lines, and ended the match with 61lb of mainly F1’s and Skimmers. This was enough to win the match, and more importantly another section win in the bag. Happy Days!
Greg Norris won the willows lake with 51lb for 2cnd overall from peg 22, and Paul Yates claimed 3rd place with 49lb from laurels, peg 65.
Be sure to check out next week, what happens on the stainy pairs next sunday, I’m taking some tissues for lee Kerry, just in case he draws next to me again…
