The Power Smashes On
Awesome Andy in Riverfest Final.
No one can deny that Preston ace Andy Power is having a phenomenal season on the commercial match scene - qualifying for the Fish 'O'Mania Final, Maver Match This Final, and leading the prestigious UK Angling Championship.
In a rare summer break from commercial fishing, Andy entered the RiverFest qualifier on his local Bristol Avon at the weekend - and continued his awesome run of form by winning the 58 peg match!
The Thatchers rod explained: "Contrary to what some people think, I actually prefer natural venue fishing to commercials, and between October and March river and canal fishing is pretty much all I do. It is only the size of matches in my area, and my desire to progress as an angler, that makes me fish commercials.
On Sundays match, I didn't really fancy my draw to be honest, and knew I would have to catch a couple of bream to do well. I started the match by balling in 20 balls of groundbait and leam to get a bed of bait down, and managed a few fish early by running a maggot over the top.
All the while, I was firing hemp over the top, and after an hour, I slipped a grain on the hook. Over the next forty minutes, I added several big roach and hybrids to my net. When the peg went quiet, it was time to try for a bream, so I flicked a small bomb over the top of my groundbait, with two casters on the hook. I wasn't waiting long before the tip pulled round and slab number one was attached! Another soon followed, but that was the end of the action, so it was back on the hemp for the final part of the match. I ended up with 29lb 11oz - an awesome days fishing, and I cannot wait to get on the Wye in Novemeber! I have never fished the venue before, but Lee Edwards has agreed to help me out, so hopefully I will have a good couple of days fishing."
