Scholey Grabs Match This Opportunity
Match Fishing's own Tom Scholey wins Mega Match This qualifier.
A lower than anticipated turnout for the latest Mega Match This qualifier, at Cornwall’s White Acres, meant that anglers were given plenty of room, divided between Twin Oaks, Trelawney and Acorn lakes, with the resident carp responding positively to the 23°C temperatures.
Winner on the day, and earning his place in August’s Mega Match This Grand Final, was Match Fishing/Pole Fishing magazines’ very own Tom Scholey. Tom made the most of his Peg 15 draw on Trelawney, where he opted to fish 6mm pellets shallow on the long pole. It turned out to be the right decision as he took 20 carp for a match-winning 132-12-0.
Runner-up on the day was Garbolino's Harry Billing. Harry drew Peg 26 on Twin Oaks and fished a Method feeder using micro pellets with a 6mm pellet on the hook to take 40 small carp to end the day with 124lb exactly and qualification for the Maver British Pole Championship.
Mikey Williams (Preston Thatchers) finished in third place from Peg 27, also on Twin Oaks. He fished shallow on the long pole to take a mixed bag of F1s and carp weighing 106-14-0.
Also securing his place in this year’s British Pole Championship final was local angler Andy Dare in fourth place. Andy caught the majority of his fish short at six metres on paste before switching to the margins late on to take 102-15-0 to the scales.
Fifth place on the day was filled by Martin Holmes (Leeds), who drew Peg 17 on Acorn Lake. Alternating between the Method feeder and pellet fished shallow on the long pole, Martin maintained a steady catch rate for the duration of the match to weigh in 88-01-0, finishing just ahead of James Holmes and booking his place in the British Pole Championship.
