Simons Leads The Way

Arrow Valley Country park has recently played host to a Learning Disability Match run by Bromfords HUB at Studley.

Good weather was ordered for the day. To celebrate Bromford’s, a Midlands Housing Association and Support Service 50th Anniversary they provided the main trophy, the Bromford Cup, and the Bromford 50 Cup for the nearest weight to 50lb.

At the draw each angler was presented with a Participation Certificate and Goody tackle bag kindly donated by the tackle trade and angling press. Both Learning and Physically Disabled anglers of both sexes battled for the Trophies and medals. Competition and concentration was fierce for the 5 hour match. Not only did the competitors battle with the fish but also the gaze of the many spectators in the country park on the Bank Holiday. Midway through the match the sun came out and bathed all the anglers in glorious sunshine.

All anglers were allowed to have helpers due to their disability but had to hook and reel in their catch unaided. Every angler caught but it was youth and experience that took the top 3 slots. In third place was Seymour Sutor (69 years young) with 7lb 8oz mixed bag of roach skimmers and perch. Second was Freddie Bully (17) with 9lb 2oz mainly skimmers from peg 70 on feeder. First place with an impressive 24lb 12oz was Luke Simons (16) from peg 8. That consisted of mainly bream and skimmers on the feeder with red and white maggots.

Not only did Luke win the Bromford Cup but he also won the Bromford 50 Cup for the nearest to 50lb!

Local open match organiser John Bushell presented the prizes and praised all the anglers and commented that a seasoned match angler would have been pleased to catch as Luke had. A tombola on the day raised money for Fun fishing for All and Bromfords charity YOU CAN. Match organiser Trevor Underwood Bromford’s Learning Disability Hub Advisor at Studley said:

“I was so impressed with all the entrants their commitment and enthusiasm. A special mention must go to the helpers, local business’s, local tackle shops, tackle companies and the angling press for their help and donations.

Next year Trevor and John are going to team up to run a junior and disabled match and of course Luke will be there to defend his title and the magnificent trophies he won on the day!
