Middy ace makes the Maver Match This Final.
Simon Skelton has won the latest Maver Match This qualifier at Maver Larford Lakes. Simon drew end peg 44 on Arena Lake, and alternated between short pole and the method feeder, before switching to the margins late on to take carp to 18lbs. Simon's final weigh pulled the scales round to a match-winning 135-12-00.
One hundred and nine anglers booked on to fish the third and final 'Match This' qualifier at Larford Lakes for this year's campaign. With some big names still yet to qualify, the pressure is beginning to build for some, including current Champion, Les Thompson (Matrix / Bait-Tech), and last year's runner-up, Ian Giddins (Maver / Bag 'Em Baits), with just two qualifiers now remaining.
Conditions for this final Larford Lakes qualifier were pleasant with temperatures climbing just above 20°C and a slight breeze spreading the fish. However, with the Summer Festival having taken place the week before, the complex produced mixed results with the Specimen lake in particular struggling to produce any significant weights. That said, the top five anglers all recorded weights in excess of 100lbs.
Just missing out on a place in the final finishing just 5lbs shy of Simon's weight was fellow Middy rod, Peter Upperton. Pete drew peg 46 on the Match Burr, and fished meat short at five metres to end the day with 131-02-00.
Third place went to Pole Fishing magazine's Jon Arthur. Jon drew peg 49 on the match burr and weighed in 115-04-00 of carp and F1's taken on pole and pellet tactics.
Robert Taylor finished in fourth place from end peg 42 on the match burr bank. Robert found some good-sized carp dobbing at various stages in the match in-between looking down his left hand margin to end the day with 104-09-00.
Rounding off the top five finishers was Yorkshire Bait rod, Perry Stone. Perry drew peg 9 on Arena and fished the method feeder to to take carp and skimmer bream before switching to his margins for a final 101-09-00.
