Maver 'Match This' Champ in hunt for £30K prize.
Matrix and Bait Tech-backed ace Les Thompson has made it two big finals in as many years, after winning the Fish 'O' Mania qualifier at Essex venue, Colemans Cottage.
He explained: “I had never even seen the venue prior to the match on Saturday, and when I drew Peg 4 on Copse Pool, I wasn’t too sure what to expect. The regulars told me that it was a decent area, but usually the pegs that can reach across to the island prove better – and all I had in front of me was open water.
"Given the warm weather, I couldn’t see the fish wanting to feed on the bottom, so set my stall out to fish shallow. I set up five shallow rigs at different depths, and a waggler rod – and planned to fish 6mm pellets on the hook.
"Fortunately, my plan worked a treat – as the other anglers started fishing to the island, the fish pushed into the open water in front of me. I caught well on a waggler, and took the odd fish dobbing in the first part of the match, but as the day wore on, I was able to get the fish feeding properly in front of me. For the last two hours, I had a fish every single drop-in, fishing shallow on the pole.
"When I weighed in and found out I had won, I was over the moon! I qualified for the final once before back in 2008, and have had some near misses in other qualifiers – including finishing second in the Larford qualifier last year! I will definitely be putting the time in, and hoping to add the £30,000 Fish ‘O’ Mania title to the £50,000 Maver 'Match This' trophy that I picked up last year!”
