Tommy Pickering Steps Down

England feeder team manager won’t fish in the setup.

After the England Feeder team’s roaring success in Ireland this year, manager, Tom Pickering, has taken the decision to step down from fishing to concentrate solely on managing the team.

“I always said that when I reach the point where I’m happy with the team, I’d step down as an angler in the setup,” revealed Tom.

And, with England team and individual gold medals secured this year, Tom was rewarded with the result he and the rest of the lads had long hoped for.

“There are other lads coming through behind the main team now, Rob Wootton for example, who will keep the pressure on,” Tommy added.

“Fishing at this level is the pinnacle and the pressure it comes with is quite incredible – meaning that international experience counts for a lot. Aside from that it’s so very difficult to both fish and manage, hence my reason not to fish.

“The team are learning to handle the pressures brilliantly and the more experienced they each become as individuals the less likely co-manager, Glen Lawrence, and I are to change the setup about,” he said.

“Of course there will always be times when some anglers' abilities and knowledge better suit a venue and we’ll continue to use that to our strength. Stepping down from the actual fishing was not a decision I took lightly though – I’m an angler and love to fish,” Tom said.

“This will change nothing for my UK fishing – I’m as keen as ever to do well and I’ve got the Veteran's trials to look forward to in 2016. Making that team will be my next goal, so I’ll start to gear my own fishing towards that in readiness,” Tom concluded.
