Trust Reveal Competitions Accounts

Report gives breakdown of event costs.
The Angling Trust (AT) has today released its annual competitions accounts. The report – which was released as a result of pressure from anglers on DHP’s Angling Answers website forum – reveals how much money is taken out of competitions to cover the Trust's wage bill, and other 'direct costs'.

The report gives a breakdown of the costs incurred for the running of the Fish ‘O’ Mania, Division Two National, Schools National, Ladies National, Veterans National, Disabled National, Cadet National and RiverFest events. Accounts for the Division One National and Angling Trust Winter League are set to follow shortly.

In his preface to the report, Stewart Sharp, head of finance and business at the AT explains: “For each event the Angling Trust will ordinarily receive entry fees and pools in advance from the competitors. Sponsorship is also received for some events, such as the Club Classic and RiverFest, while Fish ‘O’ Mania, which is a Matchroom event administered by Angling Trust, generates a small additional income. Those funds are then used to offset costs directly attributable to the competition, such as pools payouts, trophies and medals, venue peg fees, HQ hire, travel costs for those organising and attending the event, a small gratuity for stewards, advertising and postage.

“There are also indirect costs for each competition, including the time taken by our Competitions Team staff for taking bookings over the phone, sending out tickets, promoting participation, contacting the venue and arranging equipment to be in place for the day. It has to be remembered this isn’t just their salaries, it also includes the costs associated with the employment of these staff, such as National Insurance contributions, the rent for their office and the utility and telephone costs.

“While two of the four members of the Competitions Team have their salaries funded by Sport England, two have to be paid for by the Trust through membership and competition income. For that reason, the Angling Trust always aims to include a small charge for each event to cover any additional costs of the Competitions Team, although that is not always the case as some events are subsidised by the Angling Trust.”

DHP chairman David Hall said: “It’s nice to see the Trust being open about its income from match fishing. As someone who runs a business I know that everything has a cost. At least now the Trust is trying to be open and honest.

“You may not agree with what is being taken out of the pot but then it’s up to you – you are not obliged to fish the matches.”
