Welsh Federation National Championships

The excellent Red Hill fishery near Monmouth hosted this year’s W.F.A. National Team Championships which featured the cream of Welsh anglers.

Saturday 1st October | Red Hill Fishery, Monmouth | 45 anglers

The weather was hot and so was the action as the teams of five battled it out, with all competitors catching well - mainly carp, on a variety of methods.

There were many quality teams competing, in particular the highly fancied Sirhowy side that featured several Red Hill venue experts. However, it was the powerful Cwmbran Nobblers quintet of Bob Giles, Rob Wiltshire, Ian Exall, Rob Skillet and Phil Weaver that deservedly won on the day, with Bob Giles also taking the individual title.

Bob drew peg 2 on the prolific Sophie’s pool and took sizeable carp throughout fishing pellet on the long pole shallow at 12 metres. His catch was boosted in the dying minutes with two fish, both in the region of 12lbs. It was those two late fish that edged out runner-up Tony Summers who had enjoyed a terrific battle with Rob Wiltshire on Molly’s pool. Tony, back fishing for Cardiff Nomads after many years, caught smaller carp on various lines, all on pellet from peg 19 to take the section win and second spot overall.

The two sections on Penny’s lake proved to be the closest, Lyn Jones and Mark Holden doing well to win sections B and C respectively, both working hard to take mixed bags on a variety of baits and methods.

The unknown quantity was Tilly’s lake, as it is rarely match fished, but this too came up trumps with a 90 lb plus winning weight for Richard Baldwin.

All competitors commented on the quality of sport at the venue, the good organisation and the top class facilities, on what turned out to be a most successful day – especially for Cwmbran Nobblers Blue!
