Rob Wootton discusses the lessons learnt from a tremendous week in Ireland. I’ve just returned from another really enjoyable trip to Ireland; this time my destination was Inniscara lake down in the south of the country and the competition was the annual FeederFest, sponsored by ale giant Guinness. As the name suggests this event is a feeder-only affair and given the lake’s vast stocks of roach and skimmers, fishing at short range is normally the name of the game. Last year’s event saw me finish in fifth place, not bad considering 100 top feeder anglers were in attendance, but even so I was still keen to improve on this result.

With so many competitions now on commercial fisheries our rivers have had a bit of an extended break I feel. Some very warm summers have meant our natural waters have had some successful spawning years and now the rivers are as good as they have ever been. One style of fishing that I was brought up on was the waggler! It’s a method that on its day is unbeatable! It’s one of the most enjoyable ways of catching fish and a method that when mastered can bring some of the very best results. As a match angler most people would expect anglers like myself to spend all my spare time searching for just matches, but as much as I like my competitions, I like to spend my spare time honing my tactics so I can put into practice what I’ve learnt and hopefully to good use during a competition.

The Ivan Marks Story First published in Match Fishing, July & August 1988 I’m often asked if I’m bitter that there isn’t more money to be made from angling, for certainly had I enjoyed the same success in golf or football that I have in angling I would be a wealthy man today. To be honest I don’t think about it, I’m 52 years old and I can honestly say it’s been a marvelous party. I’ve travelled the world, made some wonderful friends and I’m a happy man. Angling has been very good to me, wherever I go in the country I’m made welcome and I’ve made a living for the past 20 years from doing something I adore, that I think makes me a rich man indeed.

Joe Carass checks out a new feeder range that is finding its way into many feeder anglers’ collections in recent months! We are well and truly moving toward an era of feeder fishing, and just like with pole fishing, niche feeder manufacturers are cropping up all over the place. Having fished Ferry Meadows regularly earlier in the year I was looking for various feeders to have in my locker. Rob Wootton had some rather nifty looking models in his feeder collection and I just had to find out more (not that Rob wanted me to know what they were!). Luckily I had a feature planned with Simon Willsmore and it just so happened that he had started to distribute the feeders throughout the UK.

Chris Cameron has a real knack of catching fish on rod-and-line tactics, and it’s all down to some clever feeding and thinking. Middy’s Chris Cameron holds a long list of match fishing success stories, with the most notable being Match this winner in 2014 and an agonising second place at this year’s event. but success is ever-present and most recently he has recorded three wins in his last three visits to today’s venue, Packington Somers, in the West Midlands. A big part of Chris’s match fishing game is conducted with rod-and-line tactics, and an evolution from a specimen background certainly laid sound foundations in understanding the best approach and rationale, particularly when proceedings are often carried out at some distance.

Is there a better feeling than sitting by a large natural water early on a summer’s morning, as you wait for the tip to pull round with yet another bream? Unfortunately, this idyllic scenario doesn’t last all year… As winter begins to roll in, the water cools and the fishing becomes more difficult. This doesn’t have to mean the end to the bream fishing, though. If you follow Shaun Little’s advice you can enjoy year-round success on the feeder… It’s no secret that feeder fishing is becoming hugely popular in the UK and Europe and it seems that more people are now looking at it as a year-round option for their fishing rather than just something to do in the warmer months. The problem is that on large expanses of water, like Kingsbury Water Park where we are today, the fishing can become difficult as the water cools – 100lb bags are rare and it soon becomes apparent that it’s the anglers who work hard that get the results.
