Big names exit in Northern Semi Finals. This weekend saw the Northern Semi Finals of the Angling Trust Winter League take place at Dynamite Makins Fishery near Wolvey, and on the Grand Union Canal at Loughborough. In a real turn up for the books, four of the most fancied teams have failed to qualify for the final – meaning Ultimate Barnsley Blacks, Shakespeare Superteam, Matrix Dynamite Trentmen and Maver Bait Tech won’t be competing in the final on the tidal River Trent later this year. Team backed by Chinese bait firm win inaugural Cob House Winter League Old Ghost have won the first winter league held at Worcestershire's Cob House fishery. The league was fished by 10 teams of four over six rounds although one round had to be called off due to bad weather. Over the course of the five rounds the Old Ghost team won three and finished 2nd in two of them. Each round was a test for all teams however a positive approach on each round from the anglers reaped the rewards.

These have long been used by some of the biggest names in the sport and when Des Shipp tells you that is it the best pole he has ever used, you have to take notice! For those of you who don’t know, the previous two flagship poles from Preston received rave reviews by our team. I use them and cannot rate them highly enough. However, technology advances, and the Absolute XS is the result of that.

Will commercial fisheries prove the future of our sport?“Commercial fisheries prove a double edged sword - as they allow young anglers to become very proficient very quickly – but only at a very limited number of methods. This is undoubtedly why they prove so popular, catching fish is relatively easy, and an angler can go from being a novice to being a winner in just a few short months. The problem is, commercial fisheries also produce a lot of short term anglers, by that I mean anglers who take up the sport, but then lose interest – because this kind of sport simply doesn’t prove as captivating as fishing diverse venues with a variety of species. ” This was the verdict of England skipper Mark Downes, when asked his thoughts on young anglers entering the sport.
