Fishery open match results from the week beginning January 7. Tuesdays open contests have been changed to rover matches across all four lakes on the complex and it paid off for Marukyu backed Steve Lane. Steve opted for peg 7 on skylark and fed Marukyu 130 ground bait with 4 mm JPZ on the hook to take F1 s and skimmer bream for 52lb 10oz. Second place Steve Higginbottom selected peg 27 on skylark and had plenty of bits for his 45lb 80z total which included 73 of the new F1s.
This morning I had a lengthy chat with Wayne Swinscoe about his colossal 53lb of roach from the Town Welland and it got me thinking about the species in general. The lowest weight in his six peg section was 40lb – all roach and the average weight in the 38 peg match was 28lb. it was literally roach soup for the anglers on the match and was possibly the best roach match in this country ever. Interestingly though I asked Wayne whether the length had produced again this week, I was shocked when he said that all of the anglers had blanked! The venue had literally thousands of roach in it a week earlier and was devoid just seven days later.
Middy's Craig Butterfield talks silver fish match rules, but are they more of a headache than a good way to stir up winter competition?Earlier this week I got into a discussion about the amount of anglers
on the banks in winter. It’s pretty obvious that a vast majority of
anglers are what I’d call ‘fair weather fisherman’ resulting in most
matches on commercials this time of year having very poor attendances or
in some cases stopping completely as they can’t even get anglers to
turn up. Carp, very much like some match anglers, don’t like cold weather. It can make the fishing difficult and venues very peggy.

I felt a little sorry for Match Fishing editor Alex Bones for the mauling he got in response to his editorial in the January issue of the magazine. If you didn’t read it, he was critical of a number of postings on various forums, which were, not to put to fine a point on it, simply rude, or ill-informed. The Internet is a wonderful vehicle and used properly it is a great source of learning and communicating. We (DHP) were the first angling publisher to launch an active angling forum (www.

What a week it has been for features! The cold weather is truly making its mark with Sheffield and other areas in receipt of snow. Typically this is always a tough time for angling as the 'change' is upon the country. However, once things have stabilised and the fish have become accustomed to the cold the fishing should pick up again. The features have been tough and in a very short space of time the weather really has turned against us.
MAP is offering a whole new way to organise and store your pole’s top kits. Alex Bones took an instant liking to the new system – here’s why. I love a gadget, fishing-related or otherwise, so when Mike Robinson, the man in charge of developing this new product for MAP, showed it to me I was an instant fan. It’s simple – a hard ABS case roughly five feet in length with a zip holding the two halves together and an EVA liner designed specifically to keep up to eight pole top kits in place for transport and storage.
