Few anglers win as many matches as Giles Cochrane. Here the Welsh wizard lifts the lid on a simple but devastating tactic. Lead fishing for me has been the most consistent way of catching on most of the venues I have fished over the years, purely because I am not looking to achieve perfect presentation. Essentially it is a bolt rig! The setup is simple but the feeding is not.

Saturday, September 9th saw the final of the MAM (Match Anglers Matches) take place at Staffordshire’s Heronbrook Fisheries, an event organised and run by David Marshall and sponsored by Mosella UK. Ninety anglers had made their way through a series of 16 qualifying rounds and were competing to win the £2,000 first prize, runners-up prizes of £1,000 for second place and £500 for third. Further to that ,every five-peg section would be worth £100. So it was all to play for.

John Allerton uncovers his lethal method for kicking-off a match on a commercial, guaranteed to get you ahead before the opposition can blink… The most commonly asked question that I get asked is how to start a match. While this seems to be an area of fishing that a lot of people are unsure about, it is one that I am very confident in. No matter what kind of fishing you’re doing, it’s vital that you settle into a match confidently, and if you can get a few bites and put some fish in the net early, that’s all the better. How you start the match, however, can affect what happens later in the day too.

Canal and River Trust Pairs – Gloucester Canal Hempsted – Sunday Sept 10th 34 Anglers High winds made fishing difficult for those fishing the long pole on the Gloucester Canal, nevertheless there were still some good weights recorded. On peg 47 on the old Hempsted Bend, Alan Jones (Daiwa Gordon League) continued his amazing run of bream dominated match wins this year, as he weighed in 38lb 6oz of bream for an easy win fishing groundbailt feeder with red maggot and worm. In second place on Peg 50, Jake Fowles (Daiwa Gordon League) fished long pole down the edge with red maggot over groundbait to weigh 20lbs 2oz of skimmers. On the pairs front it was individual winner Alan Jones and his partner Phil Bendall (Daiwa Gordon League) who backed up Alan with a weight of 7lbs 7oz off peg 24 on the straight, who ran out winners with 29 points.

After winning an open match at Hallcroft Fishery with 289lb of carp, Match Fishing chose to follow Colmic star Jamie Wilde through an afternoon match at the same venue. But would the fish play ball again? 13. 00 Jamie draws Peg 11 on the island of Moat Pool. It’s opposite the peg where he had 289lb to win the open match at the weekend – a favourable area.

Joe Carass gets out with a brand-new Maver pole that really impressed. Working on Match Fishing magazine means that I get to see a lot of stuff before it actually comes out. Most of the brands out there are usually clambering for page space to make sure their new and exciting product gets in front of you guys. With the new Signature Pro range of poles from Maver, though, it was different.

Assistant editor Jake Fowles gets out on the bank with Frenzee’s FXT Match+ 8ft 6in Feeder rod. Over the past year or so I have declared my admiration for short-length feeder rods. Of course, these pint-sized weapons are not a particularly new thing on the scene, but in my opinion – and evidently that of tackle companies alike (judging by the amount of these rods cropping up in their catalogues) –now more than ever they have a place in the armoury of the modern match angler. Not just since the rise of F1 fishing, either; yes, the soft action of these rods does lend itself perfectly to targeting species such as F1s, as well as skimmers, but in actual fact they are so much more versatile than they are often given credit for.
