Pollution kills thousands of canal fish in the Leicester area.
The Grand Union Canal near Fleckney, in Leicestershire, has had its fish stocks decimated by a shocking pollution incident. Caused by farm slurry, ammonia levels reached critical levels with an estimated 2000 fish dying as a result.
Match Fishing regular Rob Wootton has fished this area of the canal all of his life and was understandably upset by the disaster.
Wrap up warm and get out there to catch some fish! Unfortunately that doesn’t always seem to be the case, and in the last few weeks I have been disappointed to see match attendances dropping as more and more people choose to stay at home rather than brave the cold.
I must say that the warmth of my bed this Sunday when the alarm went off at 6am was still very appealing, but with a good match ahead, a flask and plenty of warm clothes it wasn’t long before I was buzzing about what lay in store.
With these thoughts running through my head I wanted to use this month’s blog to try and inspire some enthusiasm to those of you who may otherwise be waiting for warmer times.
First of all, it is all about getting comfy.

Squad captain Steve Conroy explained: “We recently had a meeting with some of the senior members of the squad and decided that if we wanted to remain competitive with teams like Barnsley and Dorking we would have to look to strengthen the squad with some hungry young anglers. “Some of the Welsh contingent in the squad fish Weston Pools regularly and identified commercial specialists Robbie Griffiths, Matty Dawes and Michael Rough who have all been regular winners.

Joe Carass gets his hands on ABC’s latest hit bait range, the formidable MI7. I am always interested when new bait ranges are released. Most are well publicised through various social-media platforms these days and you generally know when something is about to hit the shop shelves. One new launch that snuck under my radar, though, was ABC’s MI7 range of baits.
At £299 this is well worth a look for anyone looking for something new to park their derrière on while out on the bank. Colmic has a reputation for producing good-quality tackle and, if you look at its new and existing portfolio of products, it’s easy to see why. This competition seatbox has been designed with weight and practicality in mind – it tips the scales at just under 12kg, which is lightweight for a box in this day and age. The module slides on four telescopic legs, making it very easy to adjust and adapt to almost any bankside terrain.

Carpy Class…. Joe Carass checks out the latest pole from the MAP stable that is built to handle even the largest carp!Producing quality poles is something that MAP does well these days. Every pole that comes out bearing the TKS name really is a brilliant bit of kit, and for the past three or four years they have been gaining a great reputation. It all came to a head last year when the awesome 901 was released, a pole we simply couldn’t believe at the time.
