'the Man In Red' Returns

Jan Porter to make match fishing comeback.
Legendary angler Jan Porter is to make a return to match fishing after hearing about the new Riverfest contest run by former Match Fishing editor Dave Harrell.

Jan, who built up a fearsome match fishing reputation as ‘The Man In Red’ in the 1980s before turning to specimen fishing, explained: “When I quit match fishing, I said that I would never take part in the sport again. For so many years I had been so 'full-on' with the sport; I knew that the only way I could break away from it was to be 'full-off'.

"A lot of things have changed in my life since back then, though. I have had great fun specimen fishing for the last 20-plus years, and my recent illness has given me a slightly different perspective on things. When I heard that Dave Harrell was setting up the Riverfest, I was really excited – and keen to get behind it.

"I have picked out five venues that I really fancy having a go at, ranging from the River Derwent to the Trent, the Severn and even the Bristol Avon. I will be putting in a bit of practice to help me brush up on my skills. It’s been a while, but with half a draw and a bit of good luck, who knows? I might just surprise myself!

"I finish my chemotherapy on June 13th, and with the Riverfest and other challenges that I will be setting myself, I think the next few months will be really exciting. After a 21-year sabbatical, 'The Man In Red’ is going to make a comeback!"
