I have had a couple of big matches over the last two weeks at a very local venue, Lakeview Fisheries. Being only five miles from my house I decided it had to be one of the Fish ‘O’ Mania tickets I would apply for. I had already been fishing the complex quite a lot during winter for Lakeview’s Middy Extreme winter series. These are matches fished every Wednesday and Saturday and the winner from each goes through to a final where £1,000 is up for grabs, plus plenty of section prizes to be won.

The Ultimate F1 Fishing Guide. Martin Stokes runs through his favourite Marukyu Products to help catch one of the most popular species of fish our commercial fisheries the F1 carp. F1s are one of my favourite species of fish to catch throughout the year, they have now become one of the leading stockings in commercial fisheries all over the country. Due to their size and fast growth rates they have become a real winner with both the commercial fisheries owners and modern day match anglers such as myself.

Our new blogger Ben Sharp reports back from Castle Ashby AT Winter League that was held on the 27th February. My name is Ben Sharp, I am 23 and I have been match fishing for over 10 years, mainly at club level and local open matches. However, over the last four years I have pushed myself further into fishing bigger matches and qualifiers, qualifying for last year’s Maver Mega Match This Final being my biggest achievement to date. About a year ago, after seeing a small advert in Match Fishing magazine from a team called Preston Innovations Black Horse entitled “Calling out for young anglers,” I contacted the captain, Dan Webb, about joining.

The Build-Up Following on from a couple of good results in my most recent matches, I decided that I would try something a little different from the standard matches where F1 or carp are the dominant species. This would come in the form of a silvers-only match at Hampton Springs Fishery in Malpas, Chester. I had been meaning to make an appearance here before now but other matches or events had prevented me from making the trip. Instead, Helen Dagnall and Dave Brooks, who had been asking me to book on with them, just rubbed it in telling me how well it had been fishing! However, a free Sunday and I booked myself onto the match.

When I arrived the lake we were fishing was very coloured and really cold so I knew that it was going to fish very hard. I drew an area that doesn’t really produce but the upside of it was that I had a lot of room. The weather was really bad with wind and rain but I had the wind over my back, which meant I could present my bait well, which is key in cold-water conditions. Line one had an island at around 13 metres where I would start without feeding a thing.

A group member, Darren Tracey, who commented on a post that we put on our Facebook page asking to show us your fisheries, suggested our next outing for a review day. So we contacted Darren and arranged a date to meet up and fish with him and another group member, Barry Smith, who also asked if we could review the venue, Greens Lane Ponds. Greens Lane Ponds is a one-acre water with 27 pegs and one island. Average depth is four feet and the pond provides consistent and excellent fishing all year round, with match-size carp and plenty of silvers to go at.

Hello and welcome to the first of my blogs! For those who don’t know who I am, I work as Editorial Assistant on Pole Fishing, and am probably as one of the most fishing obsessed men on the planet! When I’m not out shooting features or in the office writing them up, I like to get out on the bank myself competing in matches the length and breadth of the country. I also have a reputation for telling really bad jokes, so you will have to forgive me if the odd corny line finds its way into my weekly rants. I would love to know your thoughts on what I write, so feel free to get in touch by email to: tom. scholey@dhpub.

Its been an eventful winter for Myles Levy, but one that has seen him have a great deal of success at Tunnel Barn Farm! When I was asked by Team Guru to fish the Tunnel Barn winter league this year I was honoured and I jumped at the chance! The team consisted of Pemb Wrighting, Paul Holland and the one and only Steve Ringer. These three anglers are up there with the best in the country and I couldn't fail to learn from them. The Tunnel Barn league is something I've always wanted to fish as it attracts a very high standard of angler, Des Shipp, Jamie Hughes, Joe Carass and the undisputed venue king Stu Palsar to name but a few. For Pemb, Paul and I it was our first year at Tunnel so we didn't really know what to expect, none of us had much experience on the venue.

Match Fishing’s Joe Carass just had to get the laptop out and tell you about his latest exploits! I would love to say to you that this week has seen me achieve levels of success that I have never seen before. Sadly I cant, and quite frankly my results this week were pants. Now I certainly don’t claim to be a top angler, more a competent one. But readers of our magazine or these very blogs could be forgiven for thinking that the top guys never have bad matches.

Match Fishing’s Joe Carass has something he needs to get off his chest! F1s, F1s, F1s! I’ve got bloody F1s on the brain at the moment. I go to sleep thinking of F1s and I wake up, still thinking about them. Yes I am totally obsessed by them! I think they get a bit of a bad rap. I hear no end of ‘star’ names slagging the poor little devils off and I can’t really think of a logical reason why.

Fish 'O' Mania champion, Andy Geldart, talks preparation. . . There used to be a time I when would turn up on the bank with just a handful of rigs and not many hooklengths tied.

Becoming a sponsored angler is something that many people have aspirations for. Drennan’s Jon Arthur lends some sound advice for any wannabe anglers out there. 1. Treat It Like A Job Interview My number-one piece of advice for anyone wanting to get sponsored is to treat it like a job interview.

The art of being a draw bag maestro. . . “What a draw bag!” “Another Flier” “Well Drawn!!!” I was thinking about these statements on my way home from White Acres last week, and the more I thought about it the more I realised how derogatory they are and how bitter they seem towards people success.

Craig Butterfield reflects on a recent feature with a difference. What is a match angler? I’m sure like me the idea you have of a match angler is someone sat on a fancy box with all the trimmings, holding an expensive pole and dressed head to toe in fancy coloured Gore-Tex clothing. On Saturday I was lucky enough to be on the bank with Dean Winsbury shooting some angling videos, now I’m sure all of you are thinking, “Who the hell is Dean Winsbury”? Well he’s a match angler, and a good one at that! He’s a master at bagging on prolific commercials and boasts match catches from venues such as Barston of over 800lb! You may be wondering how a match angler can have such huge catches and never grace the pages of Match Fishing magazine, well he’s a carp angler, or is that a specimen angler, after all, 90% of us fish for carp every week and would never dream of labeling ourselves carp anglers! We’re match anglers!Spending time on the bank with Dean and talking to him about his own style of match fishing was fantastic, you could tell as soon as I mentioned his match fishing a spark was ignited, he began to talk about matches he’s won and the ones that agonizingly slipped through his fingers due to a bad decision on his part. As he reminisced over the near misses and the “if onlys” I realized I could have been talking to absolutely anyone in the pub after one out our “normal” matches.
