Will commercial fisheries prove the future of our sport?“Commercial fisheries prove a double edged sword - as they allow young anglers to become very proficient very quickly – but only at a very limited number of methods. This is undoubtedly why they prove so popular, catching fish is relatively easy, and an angler can go from being a novice to being a winner in just a few short months. The problem is, commercial fisheries also produce a lot of short term anglers, by that I mean anglers who take up the sport, but then lose interest – because this kind of sport simply doesn’t prove as captivating as fishing diverse venues with a variety of species. ” This was the verdict of England skipper Mark Downes, when asked his thoughts on young anglers entering the sport.

Preston ace makes it three wins on the bounce! Winning three consecutive matches is difficult enough – but winning three 50+ peggers on the ultra competitive fens circuit is nothing short of a momentous achievement – and that is exactly what Preston Innovations and Sonubaits backed ace Michael Buchwalder has achieved. Bread has been the secret to success for the Milton Keynes based kitchen fitter, and this weeks result has been the lowest winning weight for the rod – and he still banked over 22lb of roach. He explained: “Although it is a fair old drive to the fens for me, it has been well worth the trip every time, as I have enjoyed three great days fishing – and won a fair bit of money in the process! I have undoubtedly drawn some very good pegs, and this week was no different – but the fish don’t jump in the net, and there are definitely things that you can do to improve the efficiency of your fishing. In this weeks match, I had to chase the fish up and down my peg, varying the distance that I was fishing to keep in touch with fish.

Angler nets £1,000,000 Euromillions prize! A keen angler from Hythe won’t need to talk about the ‘one that got away’ after his EuroMillions Millionaire Raffle ticket returned a whopping £1,000,000 in the draw on Tuesday 12 February. And unbelievably, the win comes almost 21 years after his dad won £250,000 on the Pools. Despite being on holiday, factory worker Ron Warne (46), was up early on Wednesday morning digging for fishing bait on the beach at Hythe completely unaware that he was the town’s newest millionaire. Cold and miserable he was bemoaning his freezing cold feet and grumbling that he was going to have to find the money to buy some new thermal boots; little did he know that he could afford the very best boots on the market.

The match win comes on the back of a string of good results at the venue – and Tommy puts them all down to the banjo feeder! He explained: “The banjo is perhaps a little underused by a lot of anglers –who prefer more conventional methods such as the Method feeder – but there are definitely times when the water is cold as it is at the moment when it is very difficult to beat.
