Top name sponsors for new winter event. An exciting new team fishing competition has been announced, that will start in the winter of 2013. The brainchild of Sam Wildsmith, and Angling News Week Editor, Tom Scholey, the league will see 12 teams of six compete over a four match series. Sam explained: “For a few years now, I have felt that there is room for a new team fishing competition through the winter months – and after talking with Tom we decided to get together and make it happen.
Kerry and Dicks to represent England!Mark Downes and Mark Addy, Joint Drennan Team England Managers, have announced their England squad to compete in this year’s 19th Coarse Angling European Championship in Novisad, Serbia on the Danube canal from 24th – 30th June. Following last year’s European silver medal win in Spain, Mark Downes and Mark Addy have decided to give some ‘Young Blood’ a chance to establish themselves. Stepping down this year for the European Championship are Steve Gardener and Steve Hemmingray. They are replaced by Barnsley’s Lee Kerry, who has already represented his country at Youth level and Bristol’s Callum Dicks, a regular in the successful Dorking squad, and a former Youth World Champion.
Thorne glory for Wright and Gianoncelli!Browning Hot Rods ace Rob Wright, and England Youth International Frankie Gianoncelli have won the Thorne Pairs League, after a close final round. The league, contested by 72 anglers on Stainforth and Keadby Canal is among the most prestigious in the country, with five times World Champion Alan Scotthorne, and current World Champion Sean Ashby among the competitors. Frankie explained: “Rob and I are absolutely made up to have won a league as prestigious as this – I would definitely describe it as my biggest angling achievement, and proudest moment. As the final league table shows, the competition was extremely closely contested by some of the country’s best bloodworm and joker anglers.

After all, slagging people off and praising others is almost a National obsession! Picking a World Championship squad of anglers that are fit to represent England is no different. Obviously, the manager has the last say and probably knows a whole lot more than you or I but, for what it's worth, here are my seven-man squads for both the Float and Feeder teams.
Good year ahead predicted at White Acres!Match legend, and manager of Cornwall’s White Acres Holiday Park, Clint Elliott has predicted a great year for his guests, after a cracking personal winter campaign at the venue. “Considering how up and down the weather has been, I couldn’t be more happy with how good the fishing has been at White Acres this winter. I was lucky enough to win the Cornish Winter League, and we enjoyed pretty consistent sport throughout" he explained. "The last round a couple of weeks ago was a real highlight – I drew on Jenny’s and managed 60lb of roach and F1s, a brilliant days fishing in anybody’s book! This was only good enough for third overall – and in that particular match carp didn’t count! In terms of the stocking of the fishery, I haven’t changed a lot this year.
Top prizes on offer in new three day festival. Popular Shropshire commercial, Weston Pools has announced a new three day festival, sponsored by tackle giants Tri-Cast. Taking place on the 30th March, 31st March and 1st April, the total cost for the three days is £70. There will also be an optional super pool of £10 which will pay out the top three anglers overall after the last day.
Eric Humphries steps down as manager. The manager of the Welsh International team, Eric Humphries has resigned from his post with immediate effect. The moves comes following a meeting between the Welsh Federation Of Anglers, that took place last week, in which Eric received a vote of no confidence. He told Angling News Week: “I am obviously very disappointed to have to stand down, as I loved working with the team – but in many ways it may be a blessing in disguise.
Three England Feeder teams to compete at the European FriendlyFollowing on from last years successes, which saw England’s ‘Team Blue’ lift a gold medal at Ghent rowing close The Van Den Eynde European Feeder Friendly International will be taking place again this year on 6th-7th April in Holland on the Ghent-Terneuzen canal. Last year saw two teams cross over the channel for this friendly feeder match representing the Angling Trust and team sponsors, Preston Innovations with the two teams bagging up the medals. This year England Team Manager, Tom Pickering is putting three teams forward to compete so he can have a look at other anglers who have impressed in the England Feeder trial that was held last September 2012.
