Kian Is King
Garbolino ace takes £1,000 win.
Kian Wardle has won the seventh annual Silvermaniac competition at Devon’s Stafford Moor complex.
The popular contest, which was this year contested by 66 of the country’s best silverfish anglers, takes place over two days with the first day of the competition being a qualifier, and the second a final for the winners of each section.
With several days worth of cold rain pouring into the complex, the fishing was predictably tough and patchy in areas, but Sunday’s final on the usually prolific Tanners Lake still boasted a star studded line up. England ace, Des Shipp, two times former champion Ian Didcote, Kian Wardle, Roly McEneaney Lee Farmer and Match Fishing’s own Tom Scholey all made the cut – but pre match favourites, Will Raison, Simon Willsmore, Michael Buchwalder, Joe Roberts, Mark Goddard, Jon Arthur and Simon Fry were knocked out.
The final turned out to be a tough affair for many, with more cold rain knocking the venues prolific head of bream and big skimmers off the feed. Kian’s winning net comprised of tench, skimmers and roach. The Garbolino backed ace, and former England International explained: “I was chuffed to death when I drew peg 36, as it won the lake the day before, and was said to hold a good head of tench and skimmers.
I started the match fishing chopped worms, and took a couple of tench and a handful of small fish, before changing to pellets after a couple of hours. These seemed the better bait on the day, and I caught several more good tench and some better skimmers fishing a 6mm expander over a bed of smaller, 3mm expander pellet offerings. A long pole line at 14.5 metres proved the most productive swim, though I did also manage one good tench fishing down to the bridge to my right.
I was over the moon to lift the trophy, especially against such a strong field of anglers. It is a great event – and I’m really looking forward to heading back down to defend the trophy next year!"
Result:
1 Kian Wardle (Garbolino) 24-4-0 (peg 36)
2 Lee Farmer (Guru/Chiltern Baits) 14-4-0 (peg 27)
3 Steve Clarke (Maver Image) 14-3-0 (peg 6)
4 Des Shipp (Preston Innovations/ Sonubaits) 13-9-0 (peg 3)
5 Ian Didcote (Garbolino/ Bait-Tech) 11-6-0 (peg 9)
