The King Of The Soar!

Marlow Wins Fourth Soar Championship.
They say that consistency is the mark of a good match angler- which must make Roger Marlow the undisputed king of his local River Soar, as he has won no fewer than four Soar Championships, and three in the last three years!

He is, in fact believed to be the only person ever to have won three river championships in consecutive years. The England Veteran Star told Angling News Week: “I have always loved the River Soar- it is my local river, and I have been fishing it for years- so to add a fourth Soar Championship title to my CV is an unbelievable feeling.”

Roger’s latest result came after a tough match on the Sutton Bonington stretch of river, when he recorded just 2kg 550g to take the win. “I started the match on the pole, and managed a few chunky fish running over my groundbait. Later on in the session when the fish backed off, I picked up my stick float rod- and it was this that caught me the few extra fish that I needed to stay in front of my opponents.

I first won the match back in 1994, when 170 anglers fished- and though numbers have dropped since then, every one I have won has had more than fifty anglers competing in it. I even won one year with a massive barbel, which are a rare sight on the Soar.”

Remarkably, despite Rogers unrivalled record in the Soar Championship he has never actually won a round of the Soar Valley Winter League- and it is this somewhat more humble target that has moved to the top of the list for the Leicester man. “I have had numerous second placings, and have lost count of the number of frame places and section wins that I have had over the years, but I have never actually won a round. The Soar is such a diverse watercourse that you generally need a big weight to win. If one species doesn’t feed, you can bet your bottom dollar that another will feed elsewhere, so even though you might do well from the stretch of water that you are fishing on, there are often bigger weights elsewhere on the river. You have to fish well on the day, but as with any big match there is a lot of luck involved.”

Rogers latest result comes on the back of a great year, as he also won team gold with the England Veterans team in July. “I am obviously over the moon with how my fishing is going at the minute- but none of it would be possible without the help and support of my wife and sister- I owe everything to them, and couldn’t have done any of it without them.”
