Tom Scholey on why a post-match pint is vital for the sport. When White Acres fishery manager Clint Elliott decided not to pay out to anybody who failed to turn up for the presentation on his festivals, I thought it a brilliant idea. Growing up on the northern match fishing circuit, a post-match pint and presentation is very much a part of fishing a match – and sometimes even the best part of the day! After moving down to the Midlands and starting to fish a few events down here, though, I have quickly come to realise that there is a totally different mentality among a lot of anglers – and particularly, it has to be said, commercial anglers. I can still remember my surprise last year, after winning a match on a Midlands commercial, when before I'd even had chance to finish packing up, the owner was coming up the bank to give me my envelope! Quite literally, the norm at that particular place is for anglers to finish fishing and go home – and there are plenty of other places like it.

Lee Thornton reveals a margin approach for the modern era. Margin fishing is in a period of transition, and in this feature we are looking at modifying the way we feed and fish existing baits on commercials down the margins, to try and give you the winning edge. Groundbait and micro pellets are probably the most used baits down the edge, but fish have wised up to these tactics, making methods that used to work far less effective. This in my opinion is down to two reasons: one, the fish get used to being caught in a certain way and are conditioned to behave differently to avoid getting caught, and two, once every angler fishes in a similar way, any key defining edge is taken away, making the draw more important than before.

Chris Cameron has a real knack of catching fish on rod-and-line tactics, and it’s all down to some clever feeding and thinking. Middy’s Chris Cameron holds a long list of match fishing success stories, with the most notable being Match this winner in 2014 and an agonising second place at this year’s event. but success is ever-present and most recently he has recorded three wins in his last three visits to today’s venue, Packington Somers, in the West Midlands. A big part of Chris’s match fishing game is conducted with rod-and-line tactics, and an evolution from a specimen background certainly laid sound foundations in understanding the best approach and rationale, particularly when proceedings are often carried out at some distance.

Match ace Harry Billing looks back at his White Acres Bait-Tech Festival campaign… WHITE ACRES BAIT-TECH FESTIVAL 2012 I've been chomping at the bit for the start of the first brilliant White Acres spring festival. The fishing this winter on White Acres has been awesome and this festival turned out to be the best I've fished with loads of bites and great fishing, heres my diary of what happened: DAY 1 - POLLAWYN, PEG 20 Really fancied this peg as its fished well all winter and has framed on a number of occasions. I started on the meat feederfor a skimmer and an F1. Fished on the bar at 15metres using a0.

Match Fishing’s Joe Carass talks about the first round of the prestigious UK Champs! This year has seen me enter the UK Champs for the first time in my angling career. It has been an event that I have long admired but until this year have never really had the time to fish it. My angling has changed somewhat in the last 12 months and I needed something to really get my teeth stuck into and this seemed to be the perfect competition to get involved in. The first round was to be at the fantastic Lindholme Lakes nr Doncaster.

Joe Carass Recounts the recent second round of the UK Champs, could he capitalise on a good first round?Following the good start that I made to the UK Champs I was understandably quite excited at the prospect of the second round. It was to be held at Viaduct Fishery, which is somewhere that I have only fished once and that was for a feature in the middle of winter. Luckily though my job puts me in contact with most of the big names in the sport. I didn’t want to go the venue un prepared so several calls were made.

Social networking and new media has been high on my to do list this month with us trying to find new ways of keeping in touch with our readers. We strive to produce the best mag that we can but without feedback we can only guess as to what our readers like in terms of features. Facebook is perhaps the biggest and best way of being in touch with our readers but Twitter is what’s got me most excited!I’ve never wanted to get involved with Twitter or Facebook on a personal level as I quite like my privacy, however I have recently set a Twitter account up to give my followers regular updates on what is going on at Match Fishing HQ. And what I have found is fantastic! Lots of anglers have bought into using Twitter and give regular updates on their fishing Steve Ringer is on there as well as lots of other top name anglers.

How time flies when you organise an event and I still can’t believe it’s been 15 months since the first one. Well here we are back at the prolific Tunnel Barn Farm Fisheries in Warwickshire, this is the venue of choice simply because its centrally located attracting as many anglers from both sides to attend, it has the required facilities such as a shop, café and accommodation and it can hold our required number of anglers with room to spare. Last year was our first year and it attracted 130 anglers from all over the UK this year we boosted numbers by just over 50% taking the number of anglers to 200, we also had exclusive use of the fishery giving us 9 lakes to use. We have kept the same draw format as last year which we felt was right for a large number of people to draw in a short space of time and this year was no different and I was told we got all anglers in and out of the door in just 15 minutes; it’s a great system which allows each angler to draw and not have to stand and wait to put their name on a list or find section boards, they quite simply put their draw ticket in an envelope which has their allocated number on it and drop it into a bucket and head straight for their peg.

It has certainly been an interesting week for Joe, with mice and more than a few F1s occupying his time! It has been a great week for our Match Fishing Drawbags team at Tunnel Barn Farm, but more of that later. I hope you have had a great Christmas break, I know I certainly did. Every year I use the two weeks to have my own ‘Closed Season’, which gives me a bit of time just to recharge my batteries and catch up with the family, which is always nice. However the prolonged period of inactivity has seen a few unwelcome visitors enter my shed! At first the problem wasn’t bad at all, the odd loose pellet hastily chewed by the cute little Mickey but as soon as my gear got damaged it was time to turn up the heat! Before I went away for Xmas I noticed that my cool bag had been left unzipped.

Hello and welcome to the first of my blogs! For those who don’t know who I am, I work as Editorial Assistant on Pole Fishing, and am probably as one of the most fishing obsessed men on the planet! When I’m not out shooting features or in the office writing them up, I like to get out on the bank myself competing in matches the length and breadth of the country. I also have a reputation for telling really bad jokes, so you will have to forgive me if the odd corny line finds its way into my weekly rants. I would love to know your thoughts on what I write, so feel free to get in touch by email to: tom. scholey@dhpub.

Jamie Hughes explains how a single-minded, catch-everything approach can be the key to match wins this winter! For this month’s feature, I’d like to talk about something that is becoming increasingly popular on commercial fisheries, and a method that I really look forward to using once the weather begins to cool. Approaching a commercial with a ‘fish for everything that swims’ approach can lead to an awesome day’s sport and is also a brilliant way of remaining consistent during matches when the carp aren’t feeding quite as well as during the summer months. Over the years there have been many pieces written about combining a carp and silvers approach during matches; usually a case of catching a few lumps to begin with then topping up with a weight of silvers and finishing with a few more big lads late on. While this is undoubtedly the correct way to approach some venues (generally those where the carp are a large average size), at most fisheries that I visit regularly, such as Weston Pools and Lingmere Fishery, simply fishing one or two lines and catching whatever fish come along for the entire session can be almost unbeatable! Now, I must stress that for a mixed species approach to work you need to be fishing a venue with a good stocking of different fish.

Chris Cameron thinks simple is best in the hunt for match-winning nets of F1s! There is an abundance of theories on the pursuit of our commercial F1s, and this is of course inevitable as they are so widespread and there will always need to be an evolution of tactics to stay ahead of the game. There is a vast complexity to how you approach F1 fishing and there are the obvious forerunners to the tactical parade, but it’s not always relevant as a universal blueprint to success as the variables are vast – water temperature, target weights and the specifics of any chosen venue, to list just a few. It’s the latter of these that Middy’s Chris Cameron will offer a bit more scrutiny to and an insight into his experiences at the popular Manor Farm Leisure in Worcestershire. The normal perceived approach to F1s is to get busy, and that’s REALLY get busy in respect of how many lines you will be planning to move between in any particular match to stay in touch with what most of the time can be a finicky species.

Last Sunday, May 8th, I decided to stay local and have a go on the, in Lymm. For anyone who doesn't know this fishery, it contains mainly big, old, wise carp that can sometimes be difficult to catch. The average size is about 6lb, with the odd proper munter going over 20lb. My peg for the day was 31 on Lark, a pretty average draw because it was in the middle of the lake.
