Silver bream seal victory for Welsh International. Former Shakespeare Champion Andrew Murphy took the honours in the second Shakespeare Championship qualifying match of the year on the Warwickshire Avon at Evesham, with a 20lb 2oz net of silver bream from the newly created Peg 87. Andrew, or ‘Spud’ as he is affectionately known to many, caught his fish on the waggler – feeding sparsely with bronze maggots and fishing a single bronze maggot on the hook. He ended the match with around 25 silver bream, and a good perch to take victory with over 1lb to spare.
Broughton thinks a closed season review is unlikely. Experienced fisheries management consultant Dr Bruno Broughton has added his opinion to the ongoing close-season debate. An expert in his field, Bruno is familiar with most of the arguments for and against a coarse fish close season. He explained: “The 93-day closure on rivers is an approximation to cover the span of breeding times for most coarse fish in most years, from early spawners (such as pike) to late spawners (notably tench and carp).
Judge gives 72-year-old a seven-day sentence. A 72-year-old fisherman from Fish Hook in Minnesota, USA, has been sentenced to a week in prison, after being convicted of defrauding the organisers of a £6,000 angling contest. Experts slam the current close-season laws. “In my opinion, the current close-season laws are completely outdated. Afterall, they were introduced back in 1896 when far less was known about fish science. ”These were the words of Dave Harrell, one of England’s best respected river anglers.
Top northwest fishery sees radical makeoverCudmore Fishery – the venue that is hosting this year's Fish 'O' Mania Final – has undergone a radical makeover over recent months, following a change of management at the venue. Fishery manager, Frank Clarke has began putting in place a series of radical changes, including the refurbishment of pegs, a fish stocking programme and the resurfacing of many of the venue's roads. Frank explained: “We are extremely appreciative of all the anglers who fish here at Cudmore, and as such it is only right that we continually look to invest back into improving the fishery. "We have added over 4,000lb of fish to the already prolific Arena Pool, which will host the prestigious Fish 'O' Mania Final next month.
Maver ace gets silver surpriseMaver's Ben Hughes enjoyed a session to remember on a recent trip to Stourports Larford Lakes, after banking a 2lb 8oz roach!Ben
explained: "I caught the fish on the bomb using a hair-rigged banded
8mm pellet fished at about 25 yards. I was targeting the resident carp
and bream at the time, after being reliably informed by Andy Kinder that
fishing an 8mm pellet whilst feeding 8mms over the top was the way to
go. I had drawn permanent Peg 25 (about mid-way down the Speci
burr). During this stage in the match I had already taken carp into
double-figures and bream to 5lb, but a big roach was the last thing I
expected! When I first connected with the fish, I initially thought it
was another bream, but then it started to fight back and I thought it
might be a small ‘stocky’.
