Maver is constantly adding to its already giant range of products. For 2014 there are Elite Fighting/Utility No5, No6 and No7 sections available. These replace the existing sections on the Elite Carp and Elite Allround models for brute strength short or margin fishing when you’ll be striking hard. Prices are £79.

Several additions grace the Daiwa portfolio with a new range of red and black Team Daiwa Deluxe luggage set to be popular. Hyper Sensor monofilament takes the ever-popular Sensor to a new level; this version delivers a lower diameter, but increased abrasion resistance over the original version, available in 5lb, 6lb, 8lb and 10lb versions that are most applicable to us. The impressive rod range sees a new series of Spectron models added with striking red graphics and High Volume Fibre (HVF) technology to make these the best blanks to date carrying the Spectron name. The pole range gets two new additions in the form of an Airity X45 made on the same Airity mandrel, but with new-grade carbon to deliver increased performance.

For 2014 Browning has introduced two new poles. The Z10 is manufactured on the flagship Z12 mandrel and boasts a different mix of carbons to deliver increased strength over the Z12. It’s available in ‘standard’ and ‘professional’ package versions costing £2,299 or £2,599 respectively. For that money you get 17 metres of pole plus a whole host of additional top kits.

Ex World Champs silver fish battle. Sensas-backed star Sean Ashby has won the latest round of the Northern Sensas Challenge league at Hayfield Lakes near Doncaster, with a massive 22-15-0 net of silver fish. In a rare twist of fate, the Starlets team man drew next to his England teammate Alan Scotthorne, and the inevitable battle ensued. Alan was unable to keep quality fish coming, however, and the addition of a couple of bonus fish in the shape of a tench and a bream saw Sean finish comfortably clear of Alan’s 13-12-0 effort.
