Only a few weeks ago I was competing at the Anglo Dutch Classic festival in Holland and managed to frame once again out of the 115 competitors. A 44kg match win was the highlight of the festival for me. Straight back and I was getting prepared for another high-profile European event.
Last weekend saw the second year of the Rive Masters, which was held in the Brittany region of France.
Match Fishing reveals the new IM7 range from bait giant Sensas.
Sensas has an incredible history in manufacturing groundbaits and is quite rightly incredibly popular all over Europe. So when it launches a new range of bait you have to check it out.
IM7 is a new range that consists of groundbaits, pellets, additives, dyes, boilies and pastes – everything that you need for commercial fishing.
Joe Carass gets his hands on the World Champion Feeder Rods designed by Browning’s Jens Koschnick.
I was certainly intrigued when the Jens Koschnick rods were announced late last year. Jens is a formidable angler on the Feeder World Championship scene and does well right across Europe, including a World Pairs victory in Ireland. His credentials are certainly there so Browning decided to team up with him to produce a rod that he wanted.
Joe Carass gets his hands on the new flagship Xitan pole from Browning – the Z16L.
Browning’s Xitan Z12 was a watershed moment for the company, in my opinion. Of course Browning has an illustrious history when it comes to making incredible poles, but the Z12 was a game-changer for the modern era.
The pole made the whole trade stand up and take notice.
Sunday saw me travel to Southfield Reservoir for the Feeder Masters qualifier – 60 of us battling it out, split into three zones and the winner of each would go through to the final.
I drew Peg 65, which was towards the far end of the reservoir. The previous day on the team event had been hard, looking at the weights. Pegs in the 70s seemed to dominate but I still felt positive for a few bites

Monday 14th May
The 2018 Waterways Ireland Classic Fishing Festival got off to a steady start on Monday on the shores of Lough Erne in the Fermanagh Lakelands, with the sun shining brightly on the 240 anglers occupying fishing sections from Bellanaleck on the upper lough to Boa Island on the lower lough.
The days top weight of 32 kgs 530 gms was caught on the Cornagrade section by Andrew Hampson from Chapel Allerton, which earned him the top daily prize of £500. Second was another Classic regular, Tony Hopkins from Gowna with 28 kg 120 gms, caught from peg 1 right in front of Enniskillen Castle at the Broadmeadow section. In third spot was Stuart Harford from Worcester, who landed 25kgs 750gms from peg 14 at Rossahilly, with double Classic winner John Potters from Lisbellaw in fourth place with 23kgs 850gms, also on the Rossahilly section.
Joe Carass checks out the new cane-bristled patterns from Malman Floats.
In this era of hollow bristles, it makes a refreshing change to see float makers using cane as a bristle material. I am a huge fan of cane-bristled floats and if more of my favourite patterns had cane bristles then I would use them all of the time.
I was really excited when I saw Malman Floats release three new patterns that featured cane bristles and just had to buy some to give them a try.
Match Fishing takes a look at a crucial item of tackle that makes keepnet management a doddle.
Net management is a critical part of commercial match fishing now that strict net limits are in place on most commercial fisheries. Being able to position three or more keepnets is a common issue, along with having the space to correctly position those nets.
The Seatbox Tool Bar from Frenzee is an effective way to position up to five of the company’s FXT Euro Nets in a nice compact way.
Chris Cameron thinks simple is best in the hunt for match-winning nets of F1s!
There is an abundance of theories on the pursuit of our commercial F1s, and this is of course inevitable as they are so widespread and there will always need to be an evolution of tactics to stay ahead of the game.
There is a vast complexity to how you approach F1 fishing and there are the obvious forerunners to the tactical parade, but it’s not always relevant as a universal blueprint to success as the variables are vast – water temperature, target weights and the specifics of any chosen venue, to list just a few.
It’s the latter of these that Middy’s Chris Cameron will offer a bit more scrutiny to and an insight into his experiences at the popular Manor Farm Leisure in Worcestershire.
The normal perceived approach to F1s is to get busy, and that’s REALLY get busy in respect of how many lines you will be planning to move between in any particular match to stay in touch with what most of the time can be a finicky species.
