MAP Extremis Rods - Pocket-Friendly, Zero Compromise?

Designed in conjunction with MAP’s team of expert consultants, including World Champion Michael Buchwalder, MAP is confident that they have created a best-in-class range of rods at the sub £200 price bracket. Consisting of 10ft, 11ft and 12ft feeder rods in both ‘standard’ and ‘SUV’ (Stepped Up Version) models as well as three distance feeder rods – 3.9m, 4m and 4.2m. This is a range aimed at the discerning feeder angler who carries multiple options to cover all feeder fishing eventualities.

The rod market is a competitive one with lots of offerings from lots of different brands, so it can sometimes be a bit of a minefield deciding what’s right for you. We recently had a close up look at the new Parabolix Pro range of rods from MAP and to say we were impressed would be an understatement. The Extremis is in a different price bracket to the Parabolix, but there’s certainly no shortage of features, many of which are borrowed from the more expensive Parabolix range. So, when might you choose an SUV version over a ‘standard’ version? SUV models offer an increase in power of 20 per cent over the standard version, so any rod with the SUV label is designed to give you more options. When do you need it? Imagine you’re on a short chuck venue but you need to cast into a headwind – SUV allows you to retain a short rod but with the power to always reach your target. Likewise, if you're on a venue where the fish are bigger than average, SUV will allow you to deal with them more efficiently. Or, you may just prefer more powerful rods for your fishing regardless, in which case MAP SUV versions are a brilliant option to have.

All of the Extremis rods are built around an ultra-high-modulus carbon blank. But in particular MAP has paid specific attention to the recovery of the rods to reduce weight and provide a crisper action that you’ll struggle to find elsewhere at this price bracket. To achieve this the rods use oversized American Tackle TiForged Air Guides, which are skeletal in design to reduce both weight and drag – they also look fantastic. They not only help with the points mentioned above, but also help with line flow to achieve greater casting distances, minimum drag and maximum performance. The rods benefit from the unique rubber and cork handle design, taken from the superb Parabolix range. This offers ultimate comfort and grip in any weather conditions and is finished with a super-secure screw down reel seat. The handle length has also been optimised for casting performance and the fish-playing action has been engineered to be truly unique for this type of rod design. Handle design is key with any rod, for many reasons, but MAP has paid extra attention to detail in this department so both the blank and handle deliver next level performance to help you cast further and to help you land more hooked fish, while giving all of the control you need.

As with all MAP rods and poles particular attention is given to the aesthetics. Extremis blanks are finished in a super-cool grey colour scheme with smart graphics and all of the rods come with three tailored carbon tips to help you cover all eventualities. The distance models also feature anti-frap guides on the tips to optimise casting performance and help prevent unwanted mishaps when you’re really winding a feeder up for a long-range chuck, too. This rod range will cover all of your feeder fishing, from short range, right through to fishing 100 metres plus. It’s a superb, well-designed, very well-thought-out range that will certainly appeal to a huge audience, not only thanks to the price, but the performance and features on offer.
