Giddins Top At Larford

Maver rod tops five day festival.
Ian Giddins has won the 2013 Maver Larford Lakes Festival, with an eight-point score.

Sixty-four anglers attended this year's annual five-day summer festival hosted as Maver's Larford Lakes complex. Conditions for this year's event were, for the most part, settled with the exception of the opening day, which saw heavy rain. However, there were noticeable changes in air pressure, which during the middle part of the week, the fish reacted to causing weights to fall slightly.

The standard of fishing was, as per usual, excellent with the lakes infamous carp, F1 hybrids and bream showing in great numbers producing fantastic sport. Anglers were spread across Match, Specimen and Arena lakes and managed between them a grand total of 24,370lb of fish equating to an average weight of 76lb per angler over the course of the five days. In fact, during the opening day of this year's festival, anglers averaged nearly 100lb per person. Truly excellent fishing with 1,370lb more fish caught than last year with fewer anglers around the complex than in 2012.

The Larford Summer Festival rarely fails to produce an almost photo-finish-style ending and this year was no exception with the top two anglers drawing in the same section both needing to win on the final day to secure overall victory. At the end of five closely contested days, the top four anglers were separated by just a single point pushing hard up until the 'all out' on the fifth and final day.

Festival winner, Ian finished with an eight-point score and a cumulative weight of 225.040 kilos. Despite a below-par day one result for the local venue expert, Ian put in a solid and consistent performance for the remainder of the festival dropping just a single point over the four days that followed.

Finishing on the same number of points, but 15.680 kilos (a little over 34lb) shy of Ian's overall weight was Matrix / Bait-Tech match ace, Les Thompson. Les fished an equally impressive festival despite some tough draws and very nearly caught Ian in the final hour of day five – an almost exact role reversal of the 2012 Mega 'Match This' Final.

Dale Shepherd finished in third place on nine points, accruing more weight than both Ian and Les in his pursuit of first place weighing in a total of 284.020kg. However, Dale dropped crucial points on day four finishing third in his section ahead of Maver / Marukyu's Andy Kinder in fourth place overall.

The two-time Mega 'Match This' finalist had a challenging week making the most of difficult draws and enduring a mixed bag of results. However, a strong finish during the closing stages secured Andy a spot within the top five scoring nine points and weighing in a total of 226.420 kilos.
