River on song - and prize fund receives £4,000 boost!This weekend is set to host the inaugral final of the big money Riverfest competition. Taking place on the River Wye at Hereford, a total of 60 anglers will be competing to win a share of the £25,200 prize fund on offer. The winner will walk away with a £10,000 cheque, and the prestigious title of Angling Trust RiverFest Champion 2013. Organiser, Dave Harrell believes the river couldn't be in better fettle for the weekends match, commenting: "With the weather we have had over the last few weeks, I think the river will be in great shape come the weekend.

The angling world prepares for the third World Pairs in Ireland Ireland is very much back on the map and on the angling calendar as it readies itself for an influx of some of the best anglers around as they compete for the title of World Pairs Champions 2014. Now in its third year, and with demand on the increase, this prestigious festival is set to be one of the very best yet. Reigning champions Cathal Hughes and Phillip Jackson scooped last year’s huge cash prize and became titleholders for the second year running. Seal swims 50 mile along flooded river before entering lake. A seal is thought to have swum more than 50 miles along a flooded river to an RSPB nature reserve, where it was filmed "hopping" into a lake. The marine mammal was filmed in a lake at the RSPB owned Fen Drayton Lakes Reserve, in Swavesey, Cambridgeshire. Thought by experts to be a common seal, the footage shows the seal battling to cross a barrier to get into the lake.

Ireland's premier festival gets underway. This morning saw the first casts of the 2013 Lakelands and Inland Waterways World Pairs Angling Championships. 128 anglers from across Europe went to pegs in the counties of Cavan, Leitrim and Fermanagh to compete to win the glittering prizes, trophies and cash on offer. Started in 2012, the Lakelands and Inland Waterways World Pairs Angling Championships is the richest coarse match in Ireland.

Bennett lifts the Preston Innovations Matchman Of The Year title! For the third time in four years, northern commercial expert, Andy Bennett, has been crowned the Preston Innovations Matchman of the year. Andy scored a staggering 98 points to win the event, finishing 26 points clear of second place. The competition ran from June 16th, 2013 to March 16th, 2014 and thanks to the new sponsor, Preston Innovations, Andy won a fantastic £5,000! The event works by rewarding anglers who frame in matches with 30 or more participants. Winning a match with 30 or more anglers will give an angler three points, with 40 or more four points are awarded, and matches with 50 or more participants rewards anglers with five points.

Disappointment at derisory sum. Anglers have reacted with anger to the news that their sport will receive just £1. 8million in funding from Sport England over the next four years. Over the same length of time, badminton will receive £18 million, netball £25 million and golf £13 million.

Judge gives 72-year-old a seven-day sentence. A 72-year-old fisherman from Fish Hook in Minnesota, USA, has been sentenced to a week in prison, after being convicted of defrauding the organisers of a £6,000 angling contest. Tom Mead won the bounty, after sneaking two fish from a different lake into his boat, then weighing them in and attempting to claim the prize. Fortunately, Meads actions were observed – and he was swiftly brought to justice.

If you are changing the lines on any of your reels, it’s really important that you dispose of the old line in a safe way. The same is true of any old spools of line you have.

Another £320,000 is being made available this summer to the Angling Improvement Fund (AIF) to support anglingfacilities and access improvements on rivers and at angling venues around the country. The Angling Trust, which administers the fund on behalf of the Environment Agency, is seeking applications from clubs, commercial venues, councils, charities and community organisations by 20th September, for grants worth up to £5,000. The grants are only available for projects benefiting angling for coarse fish and non-migratory trout. The themes in this round are: Fish protection and predation management Around 20 awards will be offered for fencing, fish refuges and other non-lethal measures to protect fish stocks from unsustainable predation by otters, fish-eating birds and other wildlife.
