Keith Arthur retires from talkSPORT radio. Well-known angling commentator Keith Arthur has announced that he is to retire from his role as presenter of the popular weekend radio show 'Fisherman's Blues' on talkSPORT. The move comes after a 14-year stint on the show for Keith, who is one of angling's most recognisable faces. His role as host on Sky Sport's Tight Lines programme is unaffected.
Pole Fishing editor wins at EveshamMatch Fishing and Pole Fishing magazines' group editor, Jon Arthur, has today become the 30th winner of the Wychavon Championship – after weighing in 11-15-0 from Peg 11 on Evesham’s Crown Meadow. Jon, who also won the contest back in 2011, pocketed a £3,000 winner's cheque, after a late barbel saw him clinch victory by a margin of just 5oz. Jon caught the barbel on a piece of worm, fished over a bed of chopped worm and caster. He explained: “At first I wasn’t sure what I had hooked, I thought it was an eel or a tench – when I saw it was a barbel I had my heart in my mouth! Fortunately, I managed to scoop it, and with my bloodworm fish it proved enough to win on the day.
"Awesome Display" from current World Champion. Sean Ashby is leading Drennan Team England's charge towards victory, as the World Championship moves past the halfway stage in Warsaw, Poland. Match Fishing's man on the bank, Matt Godfrey explained: "Sean is putting in a truly awesome display of bloodworm fishing, from one of the toughest areas of the match length. The anglers either side of him have caught just six and seven fish respectively, while Sean has well in excess of 50.
Ex World Champs silver fish battle. Sensas-backed star Sean Ashby has won the latest round of the Northern Sensas Challenge league at Hayfield Lakes near Doncaster, with a massive 22-15-0 net of silver fish. In a rare twist of fate, the Starlets team man drew next to his England teammate Alan Scotthorne, and the inevitable battle ensued. Alan was unable to keep quality fish coming, however, and the addition of a couple of bonus fish in the shape of a tench and a bream saw Sean finish comfortably clear of Alan’s 13-12-0 effort.
New forum puts the questions to the experts. A new angling forum is to be launched next Monday, giving users the chance to have their questions answered by the best names in the business. The aptly name ‘Angling Answers’ has sections for carp, match, coarse, sea and fly anglers – and is powered by DHP Ltd, one of Europe’s largest independent publishers of fishing magazines. The forum is the brainchild of DHP’s operations director, Roger Mortimer, who has seen similar forums working well in other sectors, and noticed a gap for a technical and tactical-based forum in the angling market.
W B Clarke ace wins Evesham season opener. Steve Ashmore has won the opening match of the season on the Warwickshire Avon at Evesham, with an 11lb 12oz net. The W B Clarke-backed rod caught a 5lb bream, a 5lb tench and a handful of small perch and silver bream on short-pole, chopped-worm tactics – beating the rest of the 79-man field by a clear 5lb margin. Howard Kaye was runner-up from the noted Peg 35 on the mouth of the River Isbourne.
Bright future for historic match venue
This time last year, the future looked iffy for one of the Country's most historic match venues – as new police regulations made accessing the roadside of Lincolnshire’s Fossdyke Canal almost impossible. The ruling by Lincoln’s chief constable meant that anglers were no longer able to park their cars alongside the busy A57 that runs alongside the most prolific stretch of the canal making accessing the 100 peg stretch almost impossible. Fortunately for anglers, this has now changed – thanks to two kind hearted people who are allowing anglers to park their cars on their property – giving two easy access parking points at two different points along the waterway. Match organiser, Alan Henry explained: “Everyone was gutted when we lost the roadside, as it is by far the fairest, and best stretch of the Fossdyke canal –and has been home to some very historic matches in the past.
Traditional bream tactics help Tommy Pickering to festival win!
Tommy Pickering has won the Maver Larford Lakes Silverfish Festival, with a six point score. The Preston Innovations and Sonubaits backed ace managed an impressive three section wins out of four in the 38 strong event – pipping Andy Moors and Grant Albutt to the top spot. He explained: “I was very lucky to have been bought up doing a lot of traditional feeder fishing – and had the best teacher of all, in Dennis White. A lot of the lessons that Dennis taught me at Worsborough Reservoir in the early 1970s have rung true this week at Larford – and I have also been quite lucky at the drawbag.
Lessons now available from one of the best in the game. One of the UK’s leading bloodworm and joker experts, Sam Wildsmith has announced that he is to start holding lessons, designed to help anglers improve their skills with the bait. The move comes after a number of anglers have requested coaching days with Sam, but up until this point he has been unable to oblige due to lack of time. He commented: “The last few months have been extremely hectic for me, as I have moved premises and opened up a large new tackle shop in Heanor, Derbyshire.

Bag ‘em team lifts the trophy after 10 hard-fought rounds!
The popular Tunnel Barn Farm Winter League reached its climax this weekend and it was the Bag ‘em team that took the title in dominating fashion! The team, comprising Paul Yates, Des Shipp, Craig Elkin and Pete Rice, scored an astonishing 75 points out of a possible 76 in the final round to lift the trophy. The league was one of the closest in years as several teams were in with a shout come the final round. Team captain Paul Yates had this to say about the win: “We have been fishing this league for a number of years now and although we have come close to winning we have never quite managed it. Luckily this year we have had the draws and performances to win the league.
