Maver and Bag 'em superstar, Jamie Hughes, reaches Maver Match This Final for the fourth year running! One of the hottest days of the year greeted anglers for this year's Mega Match This qualifier at Boldings Pools, Bridgnorth. With temperatures approaching 25°C, anglers were aware before the match that the resident carp had started to spawn, but no-one could be sure how this would impact on the fishing. Thankfully, there were still plenty of carp willing to feed with the top four anglers all achieving 100lb plus catches. Winner on the day, and making his way to another Mega Match This Final, was Maver's Jamie Hughes.

The deal, which is valued at more than €14,000 over the three years, should help the team which will be known as Garbolino Team Ireland Feeder, develop further to compete at the highest level. Who knows, they might even get their first team medal on home soil this year! SERT UK General Manager Darren Cox commented:“We are delighted to have teamed up with the Irish National Feeder team! We have recently launched our brands into Ireland and we would like to focus our attention gaining some market share in the coarse/match sector with the Garbolino brand. Most financially rewarding match ever! Ticket sales so far for this year's Mega Match This event are at an all time high with the opening five qualifiers having already produced two sell-outs and one near sell-out with the second Larford Lakes qualifier taking place this weekend also looking like a possible sell-out! Taking this into account, Maver MD and event founder, Philip Briscoe has recently announced the introduction of section payouts for the 2014 Grand Final in addition to the standard top three overall payout. There are also plans to increase the winner's prize if ticket sales allow. This year's final will, therefore, see four six-peg sections with each one paying out £1,000 to the winner in addition to the winner's prize (minimum £50,000), second place (£5,000) and third place (£3,000) payouts. "As an added incentive for finalists, I will be paying £1,000 every six pegs.

The Barston record has fallen once again and yet again it is Suzi Smith who has done it! Recording a colossal 194lb, which beat her previous record by almost 30lb, the catch was taken on paste fished in the margins of Peg 30. Venue owner Nigel Harrhy had this to say on the catch: “Suzi is extremely difficult to beat at Barston and it's no surprise that she keeps breaking the venue record! How she fishes is a bit of a mystery to all who fish here, but it doesn’t matter if it is winter or summer, she does the damage! “It is also pleasing to see the lake producing great weights such as this. We had a tough time several years ago when the lake was really starting to reach its peak. Sadly we caught the dreaded KHV and that really hampered our progress.

“There’s just no concrete evidence of what damage these baits are capable of, long-term,” says White Acres fishery boss Clint Elliott. White Acres, in Cornwall, is the most popular match fishing festival venue in the UK and well known for its relatively stringent list of rules. However, Clint has taken the decision to ban all fluorescent liquids and baits as feed because there’s no long-term, conclusive proof of the damage or harm these baits are capable of inflicting when introduced in larger quantities. “Each lake here at White Acres is a complex ecosystem, just as every other waterway is,” states Clint.

Nottingham-based Garbolino star lands 64lb 4oz sturgeon – thought to be the biggest ever UK freshwater fish caught on a pole! Forced on to Lindholme Lakes owner Neil Grantham’s private, previously unfished, garden lake due to the Garbolino Club Angler Of The Year taking up the rest of the complex, the Garbolino and Bait-Tech backed angler Jason Le Bosquet got the shock of his life while shooting a feature for Match Fishing Magazine. Geared up to demonstrate his prowess at fishing short, Jason was targeting carp and F1s on a short pole when both Jason and Match Fishing’s own Joe Carass spotted a huge tail come out of the water right over the bait! Jason said “Neil had told me that there were four sturgeon in the lake up to 64lb but to be honest we were happily shooting a feature catching carp when the beast’s tail broke the surface. Before I knew what was really going on, the fish was hooked and the epic battle ensued. ” “Early in the fight the fish was incredibly agile and leapt out of the water several times and it became clear I was hooked into a massive fish.

Kamasan Starlets edge out Daiwa Dorking in Angling Trust Winter League Semi Final! Mid-week frosts led to a clearer canal than seen during the recent excellent practices and, coupled with bright sunshine, led to a slow start for the 89 competitors on the Angling Trust Southern Winter League semi final held on Saturday, March 29th, 2014 on the Kennet and Avon canal, Marlborough. Subsequently, the famed skimmers normally found on these prolific sections failed to materialise in any numbers and the roach were reluctant to feed until the latter stages of the match. So it became a perch match and thankfully they obliged in numbers. Daiwa Gordon Leagues' Dave Micklewright virtually had the match won in the first 30 minutes when he landed seven large perch to 3lb on worm and maggot fished over chopped worm from his peg on the tree at Potters.
