Does the groundbait you choose really make that much difference? In the forthcoming February issue of Match Fishing we pit two top anglers, Warren Martin and Daniel Brydon, against each other. The purpose of the exercise is to find out whether a dedicated tailor-made groundbait concoction is superior to a one-bag ready-to-use mix. The outcome is very interesting and should have you thinking more closely about the mixes you use. Pick up the February issue of Match Fishing for the inside information – on sale Friday, January 30th.

Despite conditions appearing ideal with plenty of cloud cover and with a slight ripple on the water, most anglers found the going tough early on in the match with the heavy, muggy atmosphere hampering what would have otherwise been an ideal day. That said, as the day progressed, the conditions improved a little with the resident carp moving into the margins during the final ninety minutes. Winner on the day, and next to book his place on this year's big money final, was Steve Rothery.

Buchwalder leads as fish play hard to get. As the second day of the Drennan Knockout Cup Final passes its halfway point, Michael Buchwalder still holds a comfortable lead over his rival, Lee Kerry. On the day, Michael is thought to be leading with 35lb to Lee's 29lb, though the venue is believed to be fishing hard. With Michael also holding a lead of 65lb from yesterday's match, Lee's chances of taking the title are decreasing by the minute.

Frugal feeding key to Bait Tech Festival Win. Ringer Baits backed ace James Hawkins had five days to remember last week, after romping to victory in the prestigious Bait Tech Festival at White Acres. With cool temperatures and torrential rain, the fishing wasn’t up to its usual spring standards – with frugal feeding holding the key to big weights for many anglers. James started his week on Trewaters, and though he enjoyed a nice days fishing, and caught 34lb on a feeder, he was beaten by two anglers in his section – a result which he ended up dropping.

Big turnouts expected in new match series. Hayfield Lakes has long been known for it’s fantastic carp fishing, but it is the quality of the silver fish fishing that is setting tongues wagging in the angling world. Preston ace, Lee Kerry recently shot a feature at the venue, and commented: "The fishing really is unbelievably good, anglers have the option to target carp or silver fish depending on how the venue is fishing. I caught well over 40lb of silverfish on bloodworm and joker the other day, in a catch that included crucians, perch, skimmers and some clonking roach.

Scotthorne Rules The Roost In First Silverfish Open! This Saturday saw the start of the silverfish open matches at Doncaster’s Hayfield Lakes. Despite the first major freeze of the year, a strong field of anglers turned out in a match that provided some fantastic sport. Pegged across both Big and Little Adams Lakes, any carp caught counted as just 1lb, so not to spoil the sport offered by the head of roach, perch, skimmers and crucians present! Leading the pack was none other than five times World Champion, Alan Scotthorne. Pegged on the back bank of Little Adams, The Drennan/Sensas backed legend put together a fantastic 23-12-0 net of roach and skimmers to 1lb, as well as a welcome 4lb bream.

England International Steve Hemingray impresses yet again on the elite stage by winning the prestigious Rive Drennan Cup. Held on the vast 15km Lac Au Duc in Ploermel, France, The Rive Drennan Cup attracted 120 of the world’s finest anglers – but it was Steve who proved his class and took home the £2000 first prize. With the pole only producing small fish, Steve turned to the waggler in search of the lakes better quality skimmers. Fishing at 25metres, Steve’s plan revolved around firing rich feed-laced balls accurately at his 8g-fixed waggler.

Oswestry rod books his place in Fisho Final. Gary Hick, a gas engineer from Oswestry in Shropshire, has booked his place in the Fish 'O' Mania Final, after weighing in a 133lb 4oz net of carp. As is usual for this event all three lakes were in use – Specimen, Match and Arena – but strangely the fishery staff could not predict where the winner was likely to come from. Many of the competitors fancied Specimen Lake being the favourite due to the high numbers of large carp that the water held, and if these decided to have a go then a big weight was on the cards.

The men in orange take gold thanks to a fantastic two-day display. Finishing on a two-day total of 38 points, the Netherlands took the title by a six-point margin from Czech Republic who finished on 44. For Drennan Team England it was a disappointing Day Two as the anglers failed to improve on their Day One score and slumped to a 16th placed finish. It was a disappointing result for the team following last year's gold, but the venue turned out to be a bridge too far.
