Angler nets £1,000,000 Euromillions prize! A keen angler from Hythe won’t need to talk about the ‘one that got away’ after his EuroMillions Millionaire Raffle ticket returned a whopping £1,000,000 in the draw on Tuesday 12 February. And unbelievably, the win comes almost 21 years after his dad won £250,000 on the Pools. Despite being on holiday, factory worker Ron Warne (46), was up early on Wednesday morning digging for fishing bait on the beach at Hythe completely unaware that he was the town’s newest millionaire. Cold and miserable he was bemoaning his freezing cold feet and grumbling that he was going to have to find the money to buy some new thermal boots; little did he know that he could afford the very best boots on the market.

Top northwest fishery sees radical makeoverCudmore Fishery – the venue that is hosting this year's Fish 'O' Mania Final – has undergone a radical makeover over recent months, following a change of management at the venue. Fishery manager, Frank Clarke has began putting in place a series of radical changes, including the refurbishment of pegs, a fish stocking programme and the resurfacing of many of the venue's roads. Frank explained: “We are extremely appreciative of all the anglers who fish here at Cudmore, and as such it is only right that we continually look to invest back into improving the fishery. "We have added over 4,000lb of fish to the already prolific Arena Pool, which will host the prestigious Fish 'O' Mania Final next month.

New additive sees fish attacking plastic ducks!A few months ago, the creator of the aromatic new additive Stinky Stuff added a video to its YouTube channel showing carp attacking leaves that had been sprayed with the flavouring. The video proved a real hit, attracting almost 6,000 views. Since that date, several remarkable results have been achieved with the help of Stinky Stuff, including two record-breaking catches at high-profile match fishing venues. The latest promotional video for the bait shows one of the bait's creators, Steve Williams, spraying rubber ducks with the additive.

Sammie Perkins storms Makins practice match with massive winter haul. After a four year leave of absence, Shimano and Dynamite Baits backed ace Sammie Perkins has returned to Makins Fishery in style, bagging a winning 97lb 12oz net of carp. The 22 year old England international took the haul from peg 15 on Snake Pool – one of the few pegs on the complex that she has never drawn before. Along with her dad, Mark Perkins, and uncle, Rob Perkins, Sammie was regarded as one of the anglers to beat at the Midlands commercial – and even had an ‘Embryo Club’ of celebrity anglers that she had beaten! After joining the England Ladies team, Sammie decided that she needed to broaden her horizons, focussing more on natural venues, and also trying here hand at big carp fishing –meaning she hadn’t visited the venue for the past four years.

Organisers concern for popular canal series. The Stainforth and Keadby Canal at Thorne has been one of the UK’s most prolific winter venues over recent years- yet this year attendances look set to plummet. Organiser, Mark Silman has had just 15 anglers book on the pre Christmas Individual league, four teams of four on the Al Bailey memorial, and just four pairs on the Thorne Pairs- that has sold out at 100 anglers for the last three years. He told Angling News Week “I am really concerned at how little interest the matches seem to have attracted this year, especially when you consider how good the fishing is.

Conditions on the day were not ideal with the fishing proving difficult for some on account of the bright sunshine and lack of any ripple. That said, weights were still exceptional, especially given recent events - testament to just how well the Glebe as a venue is managed and one of the reasons why this particular qualifier venue always proves so popular amongst anglers. Securing the final 2016 Match This Grand final place was Perry Stone.

Popular carp water receives winter makeover! Recently voted by Match Fishing readers as your favourite venue, The Glebe Fishery, in Leicestershire, has been having a bit of a facelift this winter. The venue has yearly maintenance projects but with a lot of wear and tear in recent years, Pool 1 has needed more than its share of TLC. A massive project was undertaken in the early part of January, when the lake's levels were dropped to allow work to be completed. Firstly the platforms have been repaired and replaced where needed.

Star anglers divided over ‘skill’ issue. When Alex Bones wrote his Editorial in the February issue of Match Fishing, he argued that it is wrong that certain methods are regarded as more skilful than others. The piece has prompted great debate among anglers – with Tom Scholey chipping in with a blog challenging Alex’s argument. The question has even split opinion among the country’s star anglers, with some agreeing with Alex and arguing that no method should be regarded as more skilful than another, and others backing Tom Scholey’s case - and naming what they consider to be the most skilful discipline.
