Drennan has added two highly respected anglers to its ever-impressive portfolio. The first is England Veteran Joe Roberts from Northamptonshire, a long-serving member of the Kamasan Starlets squad who has also coached the England Disabled, Veterans and Juniors on a regular basis. He is now a successful member of the England Veterans himself with several section winning medals under his belt. Joe is a great all-rounder and particularly well known for his bream and skimmer prowess on both pole and feeder.
We recruit the help of one of the sport’s finest all-rounders and true gent, Darren Cox, for a masterclass in approaching rivers in flood conditions.
Flooded, raging rivers, often seen with half a tree floating down, can be a daunting proposition on the pole, but they needn’t be. You need to think carefully about your baits and rigs, but above all else being confident in your approach is as important as anything else.
Darren Cox has encountered many a river like this in match conditions, both when fishing for crucial team points and in individual-based events.
Jon Arthur is no stranger to big events, so we got him to pick seven of the best and explain what it takes to fish them.
I have had a few people messaging me recently about ‘taking the next step’ and getting into the big-match circuit. I think that’s great as, for me, half the fun of match fishing is constantly learning about new methods and venues, trying to up your game and better yourself.
It’s easy to get stuck in a rut fishing the same venues week in, week out.
Pole Fishing Magazine is to run a new, three day event at Tunnel Barn Farm near Warwick, on June 15th, 16th and 17th, 2015. The first event of its kind, the Pole Fishing Masters is to be pole only, and is heavily sponsored by Daiwa, with the tackle giant committed to support the event for the next three years. Its backing will see the overall winner walk away with a Daiwa Air pole worth £5,999. There will also be generous tackle prizes for the individual winners of each day.
Does the groundbait you choose really make that much difference? In the forthcoming February issue of Match Fishing we pit two top anglers, Warren Martin and Daniel Brydon, against each other. The purpose of the exercise is to find out whether a dedicated tailor-made groundbait concoction is superior to a one-bag ready-to-use mix. The outcome is very interesting and should have you thinking more closely about the mixes you use. Pick up the February issue of Match Fishing for the inside information – on sale Friday, January 30th.

Pollution kills thousands of canal fish in the Leicester area.
The Grand Union Canal near Fleckney, in Leicestershire, has had its fish stocks decimated by a shocking pollution incident. Caused by farm slurry, ammonia levels reached critical levels with an estimated 2000 fish dying as a result.
Match Fishing regular Rob Wootton has fished this area of the canal all of his life and was understandably upset by the disaster.
Wrap up warm and get out there to catch some fish! Unfortunately that doesn’t always seem to be the case, and in the last few weeks I have been disappointed to see match attendances dropping as more and more people choose to stay at home rather than brave the cold.
I must say that the warmth of my bed this Sunday when the alarm went off at 6am was still very appealing, but with a good match ahead, a flask and plenty of warm clothes it wasn’t long before I was buzzing about what lay in store.
With these thoughts running through my head I wanted to use this month’s blog to try and inspire some enthusiasm to those of you who may otherwise be waiting for warmer times.
First of all, it is all about getting comfy.
Top team Drennan North West boost its squad. Drennan North West has strengthened its ranks after signing some exceptionally talented young anglers. Squad captain Steve Conroy explained: “We recently had a meeting with some of the senior members of the squad and decided that if we wanted to remain competitive with teams like Barnsley and Dorking we would have to look to strengthen the squad with some hungry young anglers. “Some of the Welsh contingent in the squad fish Weston Pools regularly and identified commercial specialists Robbie Griffiths, Matty Dawes and Michael Rough who have all been regular winners.
