Trent plays host to prolific river festival. Dave Webb has won this years Burton Angling Festival, after what proved to be a good weeks fishing for many on the roach packed waters of the upper River Trent. Although conditions weren’t too good for the sell-out field - a very cold and clear river coupled with blustery winds made float presentation difficult in some areas. Those anglers pegged in the more sheltered areas benefited with the vast shoals of roach willing to feed.

As well as providing visitors with some of the very best fishing in the country, for the past few years Weston Pools Fishery has been involved in its fair share of extra-curricular and charity work along the way. Recognising the need to get more youth into angling, that is what the fishery staff set out to do by inviting Marches School of Oswestry to the fishery each year to take part in a fishery-run coaching day. The fishery staff have always done what they could with regards to providing tackle for each of the children wanting to take part in the event but, as many of us may know, that is often easier said than done. Thankfully, when local charity Par 5 Charity Golfing Group was in the fishery’s own clubhouse discussing ways they could help in the local community, owner Mike Philbin was quick to come up with a solution.

“There’s just no concrete evidence of what damage these baits are capable of, long-term,” says White Acres fishery boss Clint Elliott. White Acres, in Cornwall, is the most popular match fishing festival venue in the UK and well known for its relatively stringent list of rules. However, Clint has taken the decision to ban all fluorescent liquids and baits as feed because there’s no long-term, conclusive proof of the damage or harm these baits are capable of inflicting when introduced in larger quantities. “Each lake here at White Acres is a complex ecosystem, just as every other waterway is,” states Clint.

Truth Is Out Over April Fool Arapaima!Match Fishing Magazine can reveal that the story ran on Monday regarding Des Shipp banking a massive arapaima was, in fact, an April Fool hoax. The piece was the brainchild of DHP’s Digital News Editor, Tom Scholey, who penned the story with the help of Pole Fishing’s Editorial Assistant, Matt Godfrey, and DHP Chairman, David Hall. Tom commented: “We love a giggle here at DHP, and after talking the idea through with Des Shipp and Will Raison, we decided to run with the story. To be honest, I think a lot of people cottoned on to the fact that it was a hoax straightaway – but we did manage to catch a few people out! I think most of the people who cottoned on found it funny, which is the main thing.
