Infectious fish diseases such as Koi Herpesvirus (KHV) and Spring Viraemia of Carp (SVC) have long been suspected of wiping out carp stocks if allowed to take hold in a water. Introducing live fish originating from unproven safe stock into a fishery is known to pose the greatest risk of disease transmission. But other causes, such as contaminated angling equipment, have also been thought to pose a risk. Cefas has commissioned a survey that we hope will shed light on the level of risk posed by anglers' wet nets.

Will commercial fisheries prove the future of our sport?“Commercial fisheries prove a double edged sword - as they allow young anglers to become very proficient very quickly – but only at a very limited number of methods. This is undoubtedly why they prove so popular, catching fish is relatively easy, and an angler can go from being a novice to being a winner in just a few short months. The problem is, commercial fisheries also produce a lot of short term anglers, by that I mean anglers who take up the sport, but then lose interest – because this kind of sport simply doesn’t prove as captivating as fishing diverse venues with a variety of species. ” This was the verdict of England skipper Mark Downes, when asked his thoughts on young anglers entering the sport.

Darren Cox in Fish 'O' Mania Final!Garbolino-backed ace, Darren Cox has qualified for the Fish ‘O’ Mania final, after winning the 130-peg qualifying match at Shropshire’s Octoplus Boldings Fishery. Remarkably, this is the fourth time in his career that Darren has qualified for the big-money final – which this year carries a prize fund of £30,000. It is also the third time that he has qualified on his first attempt of a season! He commented: “I am over the moon to be in the final for a fourth time, and qualifying so early in the year will give me plenty of time to focus on practicing and preparing for it. "I was one of the last to draw on the day, and because I am not familiar with the pegs at Boldings, I picked the brains of a couple of local anglers after I had drawn.
