After five fantastic years on the River Wye, the final of the ever popular Angling Trust RiverFest competition will be moving to a new venue in 2018.
The big money event which sits as the pinnacle of the running water match fishing calendar, carries a £13,000 top prize from a final prize pot of almost £40,000!
RiverFest 2018 will culminate in a two day final on the Quarry and County Ground sections of the River Severn at Shrewsbury. There will be 24 qualifiers around the country from June, with three anglers going through from each to the 72 peg final.
Competition creator Dave Harrell said, “After discussions with many of the competitors and a lengthy meeting with the Angling Trust competitions team, we felt that the time was right for a change of final venue.
We are excited to announce a new format for the Preston Innovations Pole Fishing Pairs competition. In a break from our old league-style format, this year we are holding a series of qualifiers up and down the country, with the top three pairs from each qualifying for the Grand Final at Preston Innovations Woodland View Fishery on Saturday, March 4th.
Here, subject to turnout, and thanks to generous backing from the sponsors Preston Innovations, we will pay out over £11,000 in cash with nine pairs being paid out. The winning pair will walk away with £4,000 and the prestigious Preston Innovations Pole Fishing Pairs trophy.

Exciting New Dimension To Popular TV Angling ContestThe 2013 Preston Innovations UK Angling Championships are set to get underway soon, and to spice up the sport a little this year, a new angler rankings system has been created by the organisers. The system grades the anglers based on their performance in the last three years of the championships. Well-known angler and event promoter Rob Hughes has plans for even bigger things with the aim of increasing awareness of angling, encouraging new blood into the sport and opening the door for “young pretenders” to step up to the oche and take on the big fellas of the game. “The UK Champs are great” announced Hughes, “but the problem is, from the outside, angling appears boring.
Exciting new three-day event on Oxford's River Thames. River fishing maestro Paul Glenfield is to run a three-day festival on Oxford's River Thames. Taking place on the three prolific stretches of Abingdon, Radley and Medley, the event is expected to prove extremely popular among river anglers. Paul explained: "People have been asking me for a while now if I could sort something out on the Thames, as most major river fishing circuits seem to have their own festival, yet we on the Thames haven't up until now.
Raison's Tackle & Guns ready for opening One of the UK’s premier fisheries, Gold Valley Lakes, is all set to open its brand-new angling superstore. The project has been ongoing for quite some time but it is now ready and looking in fine shape! The shop is a 3,000 sq ft megastore where anglers can see all of the latest tackle on display. There will be a pole alley, along with a rod rack and a huge range of reels so anglers can get hands-on with all the gear, plus a mass of terminal tackle and bait for both the match and carp angler.

Exciting new deal from bait firm. Following a meeting with ABC Baits Directors Densil Thorpe and Ben Reynolds last weekend Youth Team Wales Managers Ian Driscoll and Richie Parry have announced that a successful sponsorship deal has been detailed and finalised. The bait company have pledged a wide spectrum of support for the team during all the planned training sessions leading up to the World Championships and Celtic Cup. Both parties will be working closely to ensure a healthy return to the international scene.
Stainforth & Keadby Canal to host exciting new contest. A new teams-of-three winter league is set to run on the Stainforth and Keadby Canal at Thorne. The venue – which has a reputation as being one of the most prolific winter fisheries in the country has been famous for hosting the sell-out individual and pairs league in years gone by. In recent years, numbers have begun to dwindle though – and when the previous organiser announced that he wasn’t interested in running the leagues any more, Lee Kerry and Tom Scholey stepped up to the mark.
New 10-part fishing series starts Monday!
A new fishing-competition TV series from the maker of Come Dine With Me is set to debut on the National Geographic Channel. King Fisher will see spirited anglers trying their hands at different kinds of fishing around the world, with the aim of finding out who is a fish out of water, and who will emerge as the King Fisher. Jenny Heaton, from National Geographic, explained: "Each adrenaline-filled episode pits three highly skilled anglers against one another during three separate fishing expeditions. Competitors challenge each other in their home waters, setting the stakes high while the others must learn different fishing styles and adapt to fishing in foreign waters.
Marukyu sponsor new national event.
Match Fishing and sister title Pole Fishing are to run a Veterans Championship in 2016. The event – which has attracted sponsorship from bait giant Marukyu – will see four 90-peg qualifiers take place, one in the North East, one in the North West, one in the Midlands and one in the South. Twenty anglers from each will qualify for a grand final, to be held at the picturesque Packington Somers Fishery in September next year.
