Northeast rods in Winter League gloryBrowning Quaker have won the Angling Trust Winter League Final on the tidal River Trent. The team consisted of Martin Robson, Johnny Maddison, Peter Close, Andy Dargue, Andy Nelson, Neil Nicholson, Mala Dunlop, Louis Mackintosh, Scott Lister and Chris Gowling. A delighted team captain, Martin Robson, explained: "I don't think that it has quite sunk in to the lads yet just what they have managed to achieve. This really is the proudest moment in our team's history, and the nice thing is that its been a real team effort.
Southern ace bags prestigious Middy Trophy. Andrew Quarmby has bagged the Middy Match Team Cup, and £500 in prize money after a close match at Sherwood Forest Fishery near Edwinstowe. The match, open only to Middy-sponsored anglers, was contested at Sherwood Forest Fishery and with £500 and the huge silver cup up for grabs all of the anglers were keen to win. It was an incredibly close match and with the fancied pegs not producing as expected it threw the match wide open for anyone to win.
Fishery bans Eastern European anglers. A Warwickshire fishery owner has made national headlines after banning Eastern European anglers from his fishery. Eddie Whitehead, owner of Dog Lane Fishery near Napton, put up a sign reading “No Eastern Europeans” after he had almost £10,000 worth of carp stolen. Eddie claims that migrant workers arrive just before dusk and fish his lakes – before taking what they catch for the table.
England ace signs three year deal. Will Raison has signed a three year consultancy deal with Chinese bait giants, Old Ghost. The move represents the former World Champions first sponsorship change in over 18 years, though his long standing tackle deal with Daiwa will continue. Old Ghost officially launched their bait range in to the UK market earlier this year, and have already reported good sales.
Raison’s ‘taboo’ mix that skimmers can’t resist. “If someone had told me 12 months ago that I would be mixing fishmeal groundbaits and leams together to target skimmers, I would have laughed at them. It is something I have always dismissed, but, as I have recently found out, it is a deadly tactic!”These were the words of Daiwa and Old Ghost-backed ace Will Raison. Former World Champion Will has recently banked three big weights of skimmers on the tactic – and genuinely believes he has only touched the tip of the iceberg with regard to the potential of the method.
£1,100 win for England Ace. Will Raison won yesterdays round of the Gold Valley Rushmoor League, with a massive 98-10-0 net of carp. The result cements his place at the top of the popular Southern series – and banked him a tidy £1,100 in winnings. He explained: “I drew peg 81 on Middle Lake – and really fancied it for a big net of carp on the pole.
Festival win for England ace. Daiwa and Old Ghost backed ace, Will Raison has took victory in the Stafford Moor Silver Fish Festival with a perfect four point score. Fished over four days, the festival came to a gripping finale on the final day with Will Raison, and England co star, Des Shipp tied on points –meaning the overall result would depend on who finished highest in their section! Will put on a faultless display of skimmer fishing to finish with 19lb 12oz, and take a win! Unfortunately for Des, a drop to third in section left room for Dave Guntrip to sneak in to second place. Will explained: “I always enjoy myself at Stafford Moor, the fishing is great, and the venue has a nice natural feel to it.
Anglers mourn the death of southern legend.
The match angling world is mourning the death of top southern rod, Ray Mumford. Ray, remembered by many as the man who bought the pole to the UK, passed away last Friday, December 14th, at the age of 77 years. He died of pneumonia, but had been suffering from dementia for several years.
Wakelin smashes UK Championship record!Preston Innovations ace Adam Wakelin has set a new UK Championship record, with a massive 279lb 6oz net from Bait-Tech Viaduct Fishery in Somerset. Adam took the huge net from corner Peg 119 on Campbell Pool, fishing 8mm pellets shallow down the edge at 16 metres. On hearing the news that he had set a new record, Adam was absolutely delighted. He told us: "I have been fishing the UK Championship for 10 years now and have always wanted to win a round but never quite managed it.

The popular event that remembers two angling greats is on the River Trent at Long Higgin on Saturday, September 21st. The draw is at the Stratford Heaven pub at 9am, with fishing from 12pm to 5pm. Tickets are just £25 a head.

Drennan northwest star wins at Weston. Drennan northwest angler Richie O Connor has won the Frankie Dorran memorial match fished at Shropshire-based fishery Weston Pools. The match was organised to remember local angler Frank Dorran who passed away earlier this year. Big Frank was a popular regular at the fishery and well known on the northwest match circuit.
Reynolds wins three consecutive river matches. Shakespeare Superteam star Richie Reynolds is enjoying a blistering run of form at the minute- winning his last three matches on three different stretches of river. His first notable win came in the Barford Winter League, on the Hop Yards stretch of the Warwickshire Avon. A double barrelled attack of caster at five metres, and hemp at seven metres saw him net quality roach for a convincing win of the lower half of the river.

When it comes to consistency, there can’t be many anglers who are more in form than Daiwa and Guru ace Steve Ringer. After winning the individual aggrergate in last years popular teams of four league at Tunnel Barn Farm, Steve has enjoyed a steaming start to this years winter campaign – backed up by back to back wins at the venue this weekend.
He explained: “I have really enjoyed my last couple of winters at Tunnel – as in order to do any good, you have had to keep going and ensure that you are really in touch with what is happening.
