Pollution kills thousands of canal fish in the Leicester area.
The Grand Union Canal near Fleckney, in Leicestershire, has had its fish stocks decimated by a shocking pollution incident. Caused by farm slurry, ammonia levels reached critical levels with an estimated 2000 fish dying as a result.
Match Fishing regular Rob Wootton has fished this area of the canal all of his life and was understandably upset by the disaster.
Well respected and top angler Mark Pollard has just visited Match Fishing HQ with his new range of pole floats – available in tackle shops now!
There are five patterns in the initial launch and they are aimed at silver-fish fishing and F1s. The MP range starts with the MP1 and finishes with the MP5.
Mark had this to say on the range: “The MP1 is a classic roach float and a shape that I have used for over 20 years. It is suitable for canals and drains and is great for squatt/punch work.
Another big win for Andy Power… In an epic battle Preston Innovations and Sonubaits-backed Andy Power secured the title as 2014Knockout Cup champion after a convincing two-day performance.
Those among you who have followed the story up to this point will know that day one played out as a four-man final with Rob Wootton, Andy Power, Gary Miller and Geoff Valance competing for just two places. As one of the best-ever matches ensued no-one could call the result. It was left for the scales to call the verdict, which resulted in Andy wining the day with just over 137lb and Geoff notching up 132lb for his spot in day two.
Awesome Andy makes it three finals in three years. Preston Innovations and Sonubaits-backed ace, Andy Powers has qualified for the Maver Match This Final for the third year on the trot, after winning the qualifier at Boldings Fishery in Shropshire. Andy is now the first angler to qualify for all of the Match This finals to date – a truly unbelievable achievement by the Somerset-based rod. Andy drew Peg 28 on Chestnut and opted to fish caster shallow to catch F1s ranging between 1-3lb.
'Match This' Champ has Fisho in his sights. Former Maver 'Match This' Champion, Andy Power contemplated a lie in on Saturday, but was soon glad that he made the effort to get up after winning the year's first Fish 'O' Mania qualifier! Andy was showing as 17th place on the reserve list on the day, but due to a no-show he went on to win at Viaduct Fishery, Somerset. Andy, who fishes for Preston Innovation Thatchers was crowned Maver 'Match This' Champion back in 2011, and made contact with his first fish within minutes of the all-in. Fishing bomb and pellet he took several fish before switching to the pellet waggler with 10mm pellets fished at depth.
Fish 'O' Mania champion Andy Geldart talks preparation. . . There used to be a time I when would turn up on the bank with just a handful of rigs and not many hooklengths tied.
David Preston, the man behind Preston Innovations, is selling the business after 30 years of success. The Telford-based outfit is up for sale for a cool £25 million after being founded in 1984 by David Preston, the man who started what can only be described as one of the most popular tackle brands of all time.
Now well-established in the UK and Europe many of its products are on the ‘must-have’ list for today’s angler. Coupled with the fact that it employs in excess of 70 members of staff, along with England internationals such as Des Shipp, Tom Pickering and Lee Kerry as consultants, to name just a few, it isn’t expected to stay on the market for long.
